Pita pintas for pure breeds. Bresse get as big but we did not like them as much for taste.

They were 3.5 pounds at 16 weeks and 4.25 dressed at 20 weeks.

You can tell from the one in the back of the picture that the breast will be big on that one.

I did like the Dorking X Barred rock cross, but you would have to keep two flocks for that and they were no faster growing than the Pita Pintas. The Pinta Pintas grew faster than the EO Marraduna Basque but they are a good choice too.

To answer the earlier question about why I have these Spanish breeds, they have not been ruined for their dual purpose utility. Hatchery chickens do not have it and a lot of breeders do not care about how fast they put on meat or how many eggs they lay.

Those of us with the Pita Pintas and EO Basque know how well they lay and how fast they grow. Also, they do very well in the heat here and Pita Pintas are winter layers!
Thanks Ron

I told him there had been a lot of talk about the Pita Pintas lately and they sounded like a breed he might like to try.

I agree with Ron. We just did a taste test to compare Bresse with Pita Pinta and we preferred the PP meat. We roasted it and it was tender & tasty!

Last year we compared a Cornish X with a Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock and a Langshan. The Cornish X had lots of white meat and was tender but not as tasty as the other 2. We were split in our opinions on which of the other 2 breeds was the best. I really liked the flavor of the Langshans. The cockerel that we processed was around 20 weeks old, much larger than any of our other breeds, and not full grown. I've heard from some long time breeders that Langshans are one breed that are good for meat even when they are past a year old. My farm friend gets all kinds of people wanting to buy our Langshan cocks for meat. We recently sold several older ones that were culled from our breeding program for $20 each.

If you go with Bresse for meat, I do recommend that you only use older birds for stock. We processed a cock that was over 1 1/2 yrs old and I forgot to mark which one he was. It was the worst roasted chicken that I have ever tasted! The skin and dark meat were like rubber. You could barely cut it.

It occurs to me that I am going to need to eventually have to separate my CLB pullet from the boys as I try to integrate her into the backyard flock. I think Im going to need a buddy or 2 for her in the next couple of weeks. (I don't think I can take the risk of putting her outside with one of the boys as he may start crowing). Any suggestions?

@debs_flock

Deb posted yesterday that she had some CCLs. I do not know what ages and if they match with your girl or not.

@juststruttin may have some too.

Hello everyone. I am in the county of San Jose CA and am looking on selling the home in the very near future due to some very unfortunate events and am needing to rehome most every bird accept four that were gifted to me by a local breeder. I figure no matter where I move to in San Jose four is the safe amount to keep. If you are in the area or somewhere near and would be interested in checking the flock out and possibly making a purchase for a really really good deal, that would be great. Thank you and great day. I never get responses in classifieds which is why I'm going directly to the location.

I have a Pita Pinta pullet and a Bresse/Blk Langshan mix pullet (right now she is a smutty white with some black spots). They are both 7 weeks old. I also have lots of Pita Pinta pullets and some CL/PP mix pullets (will lay green or blue eggs) that are 10 weeks old. They are both mild mannered breeds and would get along with slightly younger chicks.
