California - Northern

there isn't much there anymore, still having problems with the poopy butt though
I have found that the vitamins in the water every day seems to case them to poop more and make the pasty butt worse. Also sprinkling grit on their food and giving them a finely ground whole grain cereal helps.

This is the stuff I buy and feed it to all my newly hatched chicks. They love it! The heath food stores carry it and have their own version in the bulk bins also. Feed it dry or cooked. I feed it dry.

To tube safely you will need to get the right sized tube from a vet or medical supply store, probably a size 10 french. Then you will need to modify it. I'll take a picture of mine and post it in the next hour.

The end of the tube has two holes, which is fine when tubing larger birds, but the chick's necks are very short, so the end need to be cut off or there is a risk that they will aspirate the liquid because the top hole is too close to their mouth. Make sense? (I'm not very good at explaining these things). Once the tube is cut it will be too sharp for the inside of their mouth and throat, so you need to smooth the end with a file or smooth it by melting it a little with a lighter. If you think it's smooth enough to go on the inside or *your* nose, it's smooth enough for them.

One person told me they couldn't get a tube, so they used the insulation from a piece of wire. I haven't tried that, but thought it was pretty clever. Watch the videos I posted in post 53788

I found a size 5 that I had in the medicine cabinet and watched the videos. None of the feed stores had the tabs but one of the guys suggested that I try giving it just grit and water for a day and see what happens. Does that sound ok? Or would the additional grit just make it worse?

I'm willing to give this a try but don't want to stress it out more than necessary.

That is awesome! She deserves it.

Size 5 is small, but it will work.
Size 5 is small, but it will work. I have some of those, too, but they kept ketting plugged, so I stopped using them.

Don't quote me on this, but I remember reading that the crop pills are Docusate Sodium (Colace). Please confirm before giving it!

It might be. The pills do not say what they are.

If so, what would be the dosage? The pills do work.

Quote: I don't know what the dose would be and it's not listed in any of my books. On the rare occasion that I get one that's crop bound I have always been able to clear it by tubing water. Might take a few days, but it has always worked.

@Kaylish , if you decide to tube, put in a small amount then gently massage it, repeat until the crop contents feel mushy, like when you add water to their crumbles. Be very careful handling after as pressure on the crop from being held can cause them to vomit and aspirate.

Edited to add:
What does it's poop look like?

Anything north of Point Conception is considered Northern California. Personally, I'm north and east of Sacramento :)
