The tube actually goes down the right side of their mouth.

It can also help visualize that you are in the right place by wetting the down over the crop with a little warm water so you can see the skin. As the catheter slides in you should be able to see it move under the skin.

I second that!

Anything north of Point Conception is considered Northern California. Personally, I'm north and east of Sacramento

Welcome to the group!

Many of you probably already have a method for fixing a hatchling with curled toes, but I thought I would share how I just did one:

Masking tape on bottom of foot

Masking tape on top

Excess trimmed off

Hopefully it will be okay in a day or two

Great job!

Update: When I got home the little ones crop was almost empty!

Gave him another massage and an hour later it's all clear. Thank you all for the info and support; I think I could have tubed water if I needed to and am feeling just that much more confident in my ability to be a good chicken mama.

Would some plain yogurt and/or scrambled eggs be ok/beneficial at this point? He (and his buddy)have been 24 hours with no food; just water. (I didn't separate them cause it's just the 2 of them and they FREAK out if they're not together)
Yeah!!! So happy to hear that!

@Hangtown Farms

I am hearing there are fires near both of you (Grass Valley and Placerville) Hope you 2 are out of harms way....

Quote: Wow, thanks Ron, that was very kind of you! Not sure I'm worthy of one, lol, but it's really is quite the compliment. Glad to know some of my posts are helpful.

Personally I was wondering why Kathy did not have one already but then again maybe next quarter we might be seeing another Prestige's award bestowed on Kathy and well deserved The Educator Badge ,,,,, and well deserved I would say

go to the site and nominate her! Every bit helps since the award is given by the Administrators and Moderators

Looks like Lurk is my egg layer. The other girls are now squatting too so should be soon to get more than 1 per day

Day 14 - I promised @chickee pics of the GCM eggs so
GCMs on the top tray with 2 SFH (1 I'm not sure about but left anyway) 1 bantam Cochin and 3 CLB
BCMs on the bottom tray with more bantam Cochin
for those keeping track its 5/8 on the Bantams; 3/4 CLB; 4/6 BCM; 4/4 GCM and 1/3 SFH
thumbsup.gif
So it ends as a good day. 4 more days til LOCKDOWN!!!!

How did they look when you candled them?

I hope they all hatch!

:fl I hope they all hatch!

Bantams, CLB & 1 SFH were all nicely veined and most of them showed movement. All I could see in the Marans was if they were dark. Think I saw veins in one of the GCM. I pulled 2 clear BCM, 1 CLB with a blood ring and 1 SFH that quit early but I left just in case I was wrong.

Yeah!! First Egg

Suspect its Lurk who laid it because she was the one who was first to squat.
Here it is next to a store bought large egg. Its small but i understand they get bigger over time.
Congrats on the first egg! I love reaching that milestone.

You don't have to lie to us about 'fixing his foot'. If you just wanted to dress him up as a duckling you can say so. ;)
