They're fantastic. I adore the owner, Yolanda. When we spoke about what I wanted, she said BBS (non-hatchery) would only be possible if someone local brought them in.
Try BYC member "jeremy" He is in Oakland. He used to raise English Orpingtons. Not sure if he does still but it wouldn't hurt to check.

I've seen TJ chicks advertised as "Leghorn Types" (and that's how I refer to mine) and I think that is pretty fair. I've seen Production Whites before when the exact Leghorn mix was unknown. The price seems good to me for a well-started trio, and people are never afraid to make counter-offers when I advertise something. Good luck with them!

Trader Joes are pure leghorns. The chicks from whole foods are crossed with a brown egg laying breed--they are brown eggs. TJs eggs are pearl white.

They are different breeds.

These were Rock Island eggs from SaveMart and the eggs are supposed to come from "Judy's Family Farm". They have a FB page and I posted there asking what breed they use. Her reply was "Our hens are a variation of the Rhode Island Red". I posted a picture of the chicks and asked why they were yellow and what I should expect as they grew. I never got an answer. That was back in June. The pictures on their website shows red hens and reddish yellow chicks. I went ahead and posted them on FB but listed them for $35 for the trio and that I would consider offers. Hope someone buys them...even if it's less than $25. I don't want to have to process them, but that roo is going to start crowing very soon ( I suspect within a week) so if I can;t sell them I may have to process...

Quote: I have TONS of chicks. Though I'm in redding, very reasonable to ship them and they leave at 5 PM and are usually at your local PO first thing in the morning. Let me know I have chicks hatching each week and I really need to sell them all. I'm living in an overrun world of chickens and I am starting my NPIP testing in a few weeks. Must depopulate quickly or I have that many more birds to test. :)

If you want to try something local, Pollinate Farm and Garden is in Oakland.  I have a nice Welsummer that I bought from them.  I'm not sure if they have chicks now, but they advertise on Craigslist when they do.

That was interesting. I google mapped Pollinate Farm & Garden in Oakland. Then used it to check out my old neighborhood. So many buildings torn down, Peralta Creek is underground, schools have changed names, new restaurants. LOL- but Jungle Hill is still Jungle Hill!

Awesome! You were who I was thinking of getting my birds from (have spent waaaaaay too much time looking at the Orp pr0n on your site). I have to be out of town for 10 days in October, which really isn't an option when you have chicks to raise, so I can't pull the trigger until after that trip.
