California - Northern

I'm guessing this is my "home" thread (at least for those of us who *do* consider the Bay Area part of the Northern California). Looking forward to “meeting” you all (or maybe even actually meeting you at a coop tour or something).
I am in Alameda for work most week days so maybe we can meet someday on my way home after you get yours.

Are you thinking of raising chicks out of getting them well started?

I'm in Alameda daily (I take the ferry to work). I live 5 minutes off the island, right up High.

I'm planning on starting with chicks, yes. Which means I'll likely end up with a few roos that need rehoming.

Roos are illegal in Oakland, but that doesn't seem to have stopped any of my neighbors from having them (at LEAST four houses on my block have them from what I can hear every morning), so if I get a particularly nice roo, I may try and keep him and hatch some chicks on occasion. I'd love to mess around with BBS and Blue Cuckoos.

BTW---I have a trio of 15 week olds from my Rock Island grocery store eggs for sale. I was thinking of asking $25 for all 3. Does that seem like a fair price to everyone? Also...what do you think od what breed they are California Whites? White Leghorn? Hybrid? They hatched from brown eggs.

No feedback on these and the price?

At this point you wouldn't need a coop for a number of weeks yet. 8 at least. Depending on how many you want a large box would suffice to start as a brooder. If you get them from a breeder you are likely to have the roo problem but ordering them online from a hatchery then you are likely to get what you want.

Where do you plan to get the chicks from?

We will have to arrange a time to get together. I have Delawares, Buff Orps, Pita Pintas, and Cream Legbars we have the same issue here with Roos and I have 6 that are getting a little loud.

The Delawares are the only layers right now but the Buffs should be starting by end of Sept. I love em. I want a bigger place now so I can have more.

I'm thinking from Papa Brooder. I want something nicer than what you get with hatchery roulette. Unless I find someone local with nice BBS Orps for sale.
