I was kind of surprised by the pale yellow chicks. I'm guessing the down color came from Mom, since Dad is a Barred Rock. The hens in that flock are Barred Rocks, Dominiques, an Australorp, and Rhode Island Reds. I know that the yellow chicks aren't from the BRs or the Australorp, but that's all I know.

Since I'm pretty sure both of the black chick's parents are BRs, do you think this is a pullet or a cockeral?

They are very cute!

There were some turkeys that died from Marek's in Europe maybe? I'll see if I can find that link.

As I wrote it I was thinking that it sounded too definitive. Thank you for remembering and looking it up too.

We've lost Omelette (our White Rock) to internal laying.  We've already agreed that one of the chicks will be named after her.

I'm sorry for your loss.

For more than one:

Mushroom

I'd be surprised by pale yellow chicks from that crowd, too!

If I had to guess from the pictures of the barred chick, I'd say definitely male if the hen wasn't barred, and probably male if the hen was barred. The legs in the last picture don't look like they have a very dark wash, and the spot looks a little more male to me (but I am not great at sexing by the spot when it isn't a very obvious one).

Regarding the scale, someone posted that they use a clear tupperware type container and that they can see the display though the plastic. Of course I "scale train" mine, lol.

I do have a clear bowl that came with the scale, but didn't think about trying that. I will give it a shot next time I need weights!

How adorable!!!

Well...today is day 21. 13 eggs made it to lockdown. My chicks tend to hatch a day early...I had ONE hatch this morning at 6am. No pips in any of the others. I'm starting to get worried. :/ Please don't tell me I'm about to have a heartbreaking hatch of 1 out of 23 eggs...

One often hatches a day early.

There is hope!
