California - Northern

Chicks got all new bedding (nice and deep) on Sunday and as of this morning, they STINK! When I get home from work I'm going to add PDZ to the brooder cause yowza. Not sure how I'm gonna make it another month with that smell in the house. Not sure what kicked the smell up as the small brooder didn't smell at all and they'd been in it for over week.

Quote: I have noticed that chicks with coccidisosis have *very* smelly poops. What color are the cecal poops?
I have to ask....what are "cecal poops" snd how do they differ from any other poops?

Regular poops are the ones we see the most of.
Here is an example of one from a bird that was eating just crumbles.

LL

These are from birds that had access to grass

Cecal poops are much less frequent and lately I've noticed that most of mine do them about twice a day. Not saying that's the norm, but that's what I've noticed. Cecal poop has more of a creamy texture and is usually much smellier than regular poop. Anybody redding to Oregon know where to get croad langshen hatching eggs?

just so you know the purple eggs are not gurenteed on the ones labled croads. Its a crapshoot. If you have to have that egg color the only sure way is an already laying hen. Graceful chickens is trying. If you just want langshans @PetRock has beautiful birds but no breeding pens till next year. There is someone in so cal who says hers are gurenteed but they are not laying yet and ill believe it when i see it.

The purple is from bloom and this varies so much from day to day i don't think perma purple is possible.

Thank you for explaining that! I do really want the plum bloom but I also live the look of these birds. I already have an ee laying a brown egg, but if course she is really funny and is my favorite hen:) I think I'll wait and see what happens by spring with the plum eggs. Thanks!

Ok. If you just want amazing birds petrocks stock is really fablous shes spent a top of money and time on her flock and her last year's chicks were fablous!

Thank you, Kathy! I have seen these poops around the pen. I will look more closely at them the next time I see one.

Interesting... rabbits also have cecal poops: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/GI_diseases/drop/Drp_en.htm
