Chicks got all new bedding (nice and deep) on Sunday and as of this morning, they STINK! When I get home from work I'm going to add PDZ to the brooder cause yowza. Not sure how I'm gonna make it another month with that smell in the house. Not sure what kicked the smell up as the small brooder didn't smell at all and they'd been in it for over week.

are they getting water or poop in the feed? Or dumping the feed? Hot and wet feed smell imo.

Hello Amy Paper Lady,
Good lady were that my situation I'd mix the flour you found with 1 part scratch and 2 parts layer mash and let the chickens go at it at a pace to use it as fast as possible without wasting any. That way they would get the bugs before they all mature and fly away. The mix is to make it palatable. Have fun!
Sincerely,
Neal, the Zooman

Nope. Water is two nipple bottles which are not near the feed (and are set over a larger paver to keep the litter as dry as possible). Feed is in an elevated feeder to keep poop out and prevent them from scratching it into the litter. And I have an EcoGlow, so no heat lamp on the litter either. I was actually shocked by the smell this morning when I got up. Hit me like a wall.

Edited to add: Just did a search and read a bunch of threads on stinky brooders. Guess my dreams of only cleaning it all out once a week (using a top off method with fresh litter) were just that: dreams, LOL! So tonight I'll clean it all out and start fresh with clean litter and PDZ.

Brooders in my house are cleaned *daily*. My sense of smell isn't what it used to be, but my poor Mike's is, lol.

I have a really sensitive nose, but honestly there's been zero smell until this morning. Hence my shock. First week, with no changes: no smell. So I did a slightly deeper litter on Sunday when I moved them to the new bigger brooder and thought I was set for the week. Last night: no smell. This morning: HOLY CR*P! Quite literally.
