I found some white whole wheat flour in the back of a cupboard that has so many of those little tan bugs in it that it looks like regular whole wheat

Can I use it to make something high protein for the chickens, or do I need to just toss it? It's over a pound of flour...

I personally would dump it at speed and with gusto. THEN, I'd go and get some airtight Rubbermaid type containers for your staples. Why I say this is:

A long time ago, I opened the tin of Nestle Quik chocolate milk power to make chocolate milk for my 2 year old - to find bugs and webs in it. I'm pretty sure I screamed and scared the child... And then I checked my bags of flour (bugs), my bag of sugar (bugs), even the bags of pasta and beans (bugs). Expensive day... I dumped all of them and took out the trash instantly, then went shopping for tubs of the right size and air-tightness to hold my new staples. That was 26+ years ago. I still use those same tubs, although I've gotten more over the years as my selection of staples has increased, and the original ones still work, and NOTHING has bugs in it anymore. The right tubs are not a small outlay of cash, but not only do I not have bugs in anything anymore, my brown sugar no longer turns to rock. My only problem now is a) labeling each tub so DH can grab the right one, and b) getting them to fit nicely on the shelf - they have their places and must not be shifted!

I agree completely.

It can be a huge battle getting rid of them from your place.

Brought my sick hen inside today for a check up and to start giving her vitamins. She has a purpleish hue to her comb, she is pale, and looks to be a little labored in breathing. Anyone know what this is, or what I could give her?

At some point, I think someone mentioned a swap or auction that happens regularly in the Sacramento area. Can anyone tell me details or where to find them? Was it in Roseville?

There was one that recently ended that happened in Orangevale. I don't know if that is the one you are talking about, but it took place every 2nd Saturday of each month.

The one in Orangevale usually ends now and starts up in the Spring. There is a small animal auction int Roseville at the Farmers Market.

This one was eating a little on it's own. Since I think I lost the other 2 as much from dehydration and starvation as whatever the actual affliction is, I started this one on a thin gruel and gradually thickened it at each feeding. Fortunately it it has increased what it is eating on it's own as of today and is fighting me more on the tube feeding. I am going to take as as sign it is starting to get better. It was pushing pretty well with it's legs this evening and prior to that it could barely move them. It still can't stand though.

I think you are asking if it is safe to use it to bake something for the chickens to eat. I think the bugs will not hurt them, but I vegualy remember hearing that the webbing in the flour can be a problem due to the fibers. Baking might break them down enough to prevent that, but I am not sure.....

I am sorry she is not doing well!

I just give them vitamin water, scrambled eggs and quiet time in a pet kennel in the garage. If they do not make it I send them in for necropsy and base treatment on the results if others get sick. They often recover but I would not use her for breeding.
