California - Northern

Of course I still want to trade! :) I don't have any blues or splash & how could I deny the blacks a special home? I wouldn't go back on a promise unless there was a REALLY good reason (like, my birds were ill or worse).
I have to say just what fun personalities the batch of chocolate & black orps are - they mob me every time I go in the pen - "Whatcha got? Can I eat your shoes? How about your fingers?" Sooo tame & sweet.

Awesome! Keep your fingers crossed those combs I see are GIRLY combs! And yes, the personalities are FANTSTIC. Sweet, funny, inquisitive little creatures. I'm going to work hard to find homes for the boys before allowing them to become supper. If you want a splash roo to make your own blues with, I'm 100% positive I have one of those, LOL!

Questions re cooking a heritage bird...17ish weeks.

Do you ever brine them and does it replace moist cooking?

in other words can I prepare them on the bbq if I brine them first?

Is braising the only method?

17 weeks can be roasted. Brine helps with all of them.

BBQ would be fine too!

Best!

You are probably right. I'm just going off what the feed store told me, and we all know they can be wrong.

We bought 7 different chicks from them and they charged us for eight. We didn't notice until the next day. They also told us all the bantams were female, ( with that whole 95% certainty loophole) but we found out later they were actually straight run.

Yep, those are black mottled. Very cute!

I have some (d'Anvers) in those colors.

These are Mille Fleur roosters~

And this is a black mottled pullet and blue mottled rooster~

d'Anvers are very addicting. I am looking forward to hatching MF, black, blue, and chocolate mottled, porcelain, khaki and khaki quail next year.

I bet! I took one look at those pictures and immediately had to give myself a lecture

about how long my *must have* list already is

and how I CANT have another "pet"

breed.

Yep, they are definitely pets. The hens are very friendly and I am constantly having to pick them off of me

I will say though, they out lay my LF by far and are easily deterred from being broody. Not one of my LF are laying right now, but my bantams are pumping out eggs like crazy.
