SOOOO far behind can't catch up. Want to get back in touch and say hi to all you cool chicken friends. My plate over flowed and I had to make some hard decisions in my pet collection! I must confess :

I gave up -

Quail flock
Bantam Colombian Rock roo
My entire olandsk dwarf flock

A mama cat and 3 kittens ( kept two from her litter)
And a ton of household items

I feel a million lbs lighter

Truth - snow country people- isn't fall cleaning way more aggressive than spring?

@petrock I found a late bloomer cockerel in my pp

And he is kind(so far) and beautiful with solid yellow legs!!!!! Whoooo hoooooo. But the "peeps in Paradise " yard is now off limits to my 3 year old just in case. I only have two hens so come jan I hope to fire up the brinsea and focus on just on the pita pinta. Even my husband was impressed with their sheen and Hardy health. My Orpington had chewing lice bad and everyone else had a few here and there so of course we treated everyone. The pita pinta had NOTHING!!! Treated them anyway to keep the timing in sync...I have made him a rooster collar and it has his volume close to the hens. So far so good

Another Pita Pinta owner!

I keep imagining my layer flock being half Pita Pinta....

Those do look just like them except none of those have feathers on their feet like mine.
That is because they are "d'Anvers" not d'Uccles. Both breeds come from the similar ancestors, but the d'Uccles have single combs and feathered legs and the d'Anvers have rose combs and clean legs.

Been away for a bit. There is no way I can catch up but will just pick up from here.

I have finished my Quail pen and am very pleased with how it turned out. I posted a little video of it here:

I am getting ready to add the automatic waterers and am wondering abnout how I should set them up. I have purchased some of the cups with the PVC connectors.

I am thinking of running a PVC pipe with the drinkers along the right hand interior wall of each level with 2 cups per pen. It will be pucket fed for now until I can run some PVC pipe water supply into the pen (most likely in the spring). I would like to have one connetor to the bucket, the branch off to run the 2 lines. Will the bucket need to be above the uppermost line or can I have it below the topmost and above the lower one? I am juat thinking that lifting a bucket that high will be tough. I will be mounting a bracket on the fence to hang the bucket from.

I have these low pressure cups and they work great. I think the bucket is not supposed to be more than three or four feet above the cup height. For gravity feed obviously the bucket has to be above the cups. I have a five gallon bucket about three feet above the cups with pvc pipe coming out of the bucket and running to the cups. Inside the bucket I installed a toilet fill valve connected to a hose (pvc pipe would also work great). The bucket always stays full and with the lid on the bucket the water stays clean. I check the bucket almost daily just to make sure the chickens won't run out of water, but I think this is about the easiest and longest lasting set up you can do.

Yeah!!! We processed extra cockerels last weekend and I intended on narrowing my Pita Pinta boys down to the best 3. But then I decided to keep the youngest 3 for a while longer so I ended up with 6 in the cockerel pen at the farm (7 counting Chris's PP boy). I have a few more young ones here in town including 1 teen-age boy who has the most of white of any boy that I have hatched & kept. I love my Pita Pintas! They are now tied for top with my Langshan!

@ronott1 I have a dream flock with PPs too
big_smile.png
The one in my head currently has:

A Brown egg flock with PP breeders NH breeders and maybe Konza breeders and misc brown and chocolate egg layers

A white egg flock With CA Grey breeders plus Dorkings and Houdans plus colored egg layers

A Broody Bantam flock with Silkies and Cochins and maybe D'Uccle. @TheKeeper s cuckoo sizzled cockerel will be at the head of this group

The one in my actual yard is not really close to this vision...yet

This will all take time. Lots of substitutions and a bit of construction coming up in the next years...My problem is I love my backyard mixes. They lay like champs and are some of my best broodies so it makes it hard to let go of them.

My layer flock here in town is probably 35% Pita Pinta, 30% Langshan, and 35% assorted breeds & PP mixes.

When do your PPs start to lay? my little girl is 20 weeks today. Should I expect anything before January. She doesn't look remotely ready and I am just curious.

My serama hen is dping something weird. shes twitching and shaking her head repeatedly like spmething is bothering her bit i dont see anything

Took a couple of quick pictures of my favorite little mix from my last hatch. She's 13 days old and I can just see the beginning of a crest. :love
