California - Northern

It was 28.8 here at 600 feet, at 6:00 a.m. No ice crystals in my hummie water, no ice in my chicken water. Hens were a little more vocal, however...

My chickens seem happier this morning without the North Wind.

No ice on the water here but frost on the roof top.

It was frosty on all the rooftops around here too. And my last tomato plant has died from the cold. It was 35.x last night by 9 o'clock! That's much earlier in the evening than we usually get that kind of chill.

Hi guys I have a broody hatch going and I need HELP!!!.

Found this chick all icey and not under mama so brought her in and put her under a heat lamp. Put Nutridrench on her foot and squirted Vetricyn on this vascular protrusion coming out of her vent. She is chirping and moving around her little box but I am wondering what it is and what else I should do. Chick has two fluffed siblings and two more remaining unhatched but internally pipped all are from an eggs from

It appears to be drying out.

I would leave it. Check on it in a few hours, but make sure you don't take the egg out from under mama (or incubator) for too long. I've had chicks chirp and then do nothing for hours, then bam! Next morning they are out and fluffy.

Good luck with your chicks! You're doing great.

Congrats on the 2 and I hope that the other 2 hatch! I also hope that this little one makes it. It looks like it has an unabsorbed umbilicus to me. I hatched over 200 chicks last year and I had this happen less than 5 times. Most of them did not survive. After the first time it happened, someone on BYC recommended putting iodine on it to kill bacteria and help it dry out. Vetericyn Spray or Gel would probably work, too. You will need to keep her separate from the other chicks until the problem is resolved so she doesn't get picked on. I wish that I had kept better records. I just chalked it up to something that happens occasionally.

Here is a BYC page that talks about it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/mushy-chick-disease-yolk-sack-infection-omphalitis
