And Splash??? Still on the quest for Splash.

BBS are supposed to lay better. My girl just started about 4 weeks ago and she is giving me 3-4 a week right now. Gotta love copious amounts of green eggs

I have 1 splash cockerel but he is smaller than the blue and his tail is slightly pinched. I will probably put him with some of my big black pullets to see if I can get some decent blues out of him. I won't be breeding for splash until I have some decent blue pullets. Breeding for multiple colors sure takes more time and pen space. It would be so much easier if I was just breeding black but I love the blue and splash coloring.

If anyone is interested, I'm thinning down my flock and I have some Barnevelder pullets available for local pick up in the Redding/ Red Bluff area. I might be able to meet as far south as Chico/ Orland. So far, I have at least three pullets I need to rehome and I probably have more later. These three don't lay very dark eggs ( it's why I'm not keeping them for breeding), but are pretty. I'll have chicks and hatching eggs available soon as well

She is so pretty! If I wasn't suffering from chicken overload, I would at least one of them to my layer flock. They would make beautiful lawn art!

I've got 34 bantam Silkie/Cochin mix (Sizzles?) set to hatch on Monday - 18 with three 1st time broodies and 16 in the bator. Just went to lockdown the bator and I already have a pip! Are they usually early hatchers? The last group of 7 I hatched were right on time.

Supposedly its high temps that promote early hatching.

Ive often wondered if early hatchers may have started before setting if temp was high enough partially sat before collection.

The high temp promotes other development problems too. May need to monitor the temps more often.

Temps should have been dead on this time. I upgraded to a Brinsea Spot-Check had consistant temps throughtout the incubation. Also, none of the others are even internally pipped yet. I'm thinking I either have an over-achiever or one of my girls sat on this particular egg for a day before I collected it...

Several things can cause early hatching. Silkes do hatch early and crosses too because of hybrid vigor. A second cause is pre incubation. If a Broody sat on the eggs for a day or two before being collected, the eggs will develop and then suspend when collected and then hatch early.

Temperature could be a cause but is less likely since you had an on time hatch with your last hatch.

Get the brooder ready!

oh man oh man oh man...I love his coloring! I am in no hurry. I just don't know enough abut genetics to know if a splash could maybe sneak out of a blue/black pairing.

Tried to take pics of Abel yesterday but she/he was not having it. It is hard to tell with these little mixes but she/he is definitely the least masculine looking and acting chick from Norma's crew.

Sadly, no. You need a Blue/Blue or a Blue/Splash to get Splash. There's a great set of Punnett Squares for BBS on the forum:
