Sorry you lost your little one. She sounds like a really cool chick.

With mine, even though they don't seem to be very proactively aggressive, I would not mix them with bantams or breeds ill-equipped to hold their own against large fowl breeds. I would be afraid of the doms getting bored and starting to pick on them, or just being too assertive when it came to sharing resources. I tend to be a worry wart and overly careful, though. I also tend to really not like mixing LF band bantams anyway, so I may be a bit prejudiced.

Thanks for the input about the Dom -- we loved our chick but in hindsight she may not have mixed well with our flock even though Doms are a lightweight bird. We've planned our breeds around the Silkies which we had from the very first. Any breed that didn't play "nice" with the Silkies were rehomed. We are down to 2 Silkies and 1 Blue Wheaten Ameraucana (my avatar) in our backyard. We've gone through 9 birds -- rehomed a "pullet" that turned out a cockerel, rehomed 3 bully breeds, and lost 2 in death. In the Spring we are adding another Amer pullet and a Breda pullet which I understand is a gentle breed. Our flock will be all gentles and 5-lbs or under. Our Blue Wheaten Amer is a nurturing breed and non-combative so we felt "safe" adding a 2nd Amer to the flock. Amers are kooky spooky jumpy alert birds but seem quite content to stay out of flock politics and walk away from chest-bumping, challenges, or conflicts. The Breda will be a total experiment for us but by all accounts of owners they say their lightweight Breda hens are quite docile in a flock so I'm hoping for the best with her integration.

In any event the best plus is that I won't have straight-comb issues with any of these breeds!

Anyone interested in golden cuckoo Marans eggs? I collected these eggs this week but decided to wait to set eggs until I have a few more OE to set (only one Ameraucana laying every couple of days) and these are ready now. If interested PM me. I am in Grass Valley.

This picture is of the actual eggs you will be getting

Beautiful eggs!

I have found the Cream Legbars to be calm, and I have quite a few breeds to compare them to. I do handle them a lot when they are young.
I find mine are active but not really jumpy. They are more assertive within the flock; less so than my barred rock but not as laid back as my orps.

is that your best egg color with the various Penedesencas? These look great!

Thanks.
no I have had darker though this is the darkest in awhile. a few of my Empordanesa I had laid darker eggs. One of the Partridge girls is close. My crele girls are not laying much yet but a few of them where dark layers.
from a friend I got some eggs but none hatched. They where the darkest I had seen of any Penedesenca. I am trying to breed more for Type myself Hopefully will keep the dark eggs going. I got a post from the Dr. in Spain I will se if I go post

bottom pic is bad but a better example. these where actually from some Black Penedesenca as well

Quote: Except for 1 pure Ameraucana, mine were all flighty as heck, which is why I got rid of them. When a fully grown pullet squeezes herself through non-climb fencing to try to get away from you, it's a bit ridiculous. My 1 calm one was my best broody, but the bobcat got her.

My Cream Legbar is very mellow, she doesn't bother any of the other birds. Her eggs are gorgeous and very large. These were her first eggs.

I have not had any U of A Blues, so I can't comment on them.

I have not seen UofA Blues be aggressive with other breeds or people. They are like leghorns x araucana so they act like them. They are also litlle for large fowl.

I added two OE pullets and one Partridge Pene pullet in with four UofA Blues. There was not problem with aggression.

Penedesencas are very similar so if you have any of Jasons Crele Penes you will have an idea of what they are like. Well except that they are smaller then Crele Penedesenca chickens.

flighty does not mean aggressive or crazy. They are just energetic and good foragers. They also like to fly.

flighty means best bird for predator prone areas. Ameraucana are far less alert than the U of A's or Penedesenca crossed olive eggers

Thanks.

Beautiful eggs! The farmer who owns the land where my breeding flocks are housed, is interested in getting some chickens that lay dark brown eggs. We have both tried hatching FBCM. His hatched but then died and not a single egg hatched for me. Maybe we need to get a Spanish breed since we are both very happy with our Spanish Pita Pinta.
