California - Northern

Beautiful, lucky birds who live in such a nice place, and taken care of by a lovely lady!!
When your NHs have chicks, I think you will love those, big, golden orange babies who develop quite fast. I always enjoy the cockerels because at around 4 1/2- 5 mos., of age, they are taller than my Orp. cock birds, with huge feet and looong legs. When they run around aimless and awkwardly on those stilts, it is a sight to behold.

You are sweet. I am looking forward to chick season for sure. The NH cockerels sound like the Del boys...all spastic gangliness lol.

I have never done a breeding pen before and I have questions.

What is the optimal number of girls to have in there with Ike. Currently he has 6 . The pen is 60 square feet. The coop is elevated and is an additional 15 square feet they are pretty much only in there to sleep and nest. There is plenty of roosting room in there and two nest boxes and there are two roosts in the pen as well.

They all get out for a few hours Tues and Thursdays and on Sundays they are out from late morning until they coop themselves at dusk. I let Ike out on most other days to give the girls a break

Everyone is getting along and all but I am concerned about them being a bit crowded. Do you have any thoughts?

That's funny -- I'm looking for an Olde Boston Bulldogge (not an English Bulldog) breeder from which the Boston Terriers eventually came from!!! The only 3 breeders I found were Canada, NY, or Texas and none of them returned my queries. Hope you find your quality BT - they have almost an identical personality to the OBB except I could never get used to the French Bulldog ears that got crossbred w/ the OBBs to create the present-day BTs.
Hi, I've found some quality dogs but they are outrageously expensive!!! My co-worker got one from Kansas that was half the price, but she has a niece there that she went to visit with so the extra expense was justified. Not so much for me :)

If you go to the AKC Mother Club of B. Terriers, "Boston Terrier Club Of America", and send email to the club secretary as to what criterias you are looking for, and your city and state, they will give you a list of breeders ASAP. AKC mother clubs are always very helpful and prompt. Since they are sanctioned by The AKC, you can trust their replies.

Thank you Lual. I am in contact with several breeders now. :)

It sounds very reasonable, but I wouldn't add more though, as that is almost to the max. The more they get to go out, the less chickens fuss with each other, especially if their coop & run space is limited. There are too many interesting things out there to do & see, so the more they get to go out, the better they interact. It sounds like you let them out as much as you can, and they are not misbehaving, so keep it up! I follow a rule of thumb that if I can't let them out (for whatever reason) for three days in a row, then I give them something to work on, like a cabbage, which can keep them occupied.

Came home from work to find the valve on my Chicken Fountain has failed and there was water just pouring out the stupid thing. Sooooo not happy at the moment. Sent them an email. We'll see what they say. There's no way for me to fix it or replace the valve. The only option is for them to send me a new one and I'm not sure they will.

Thanks! I got every pen a cabbage and my breeders were free to roam for about 2 hours today. I only have two layers in there at the moment...one pullet and one nearly 2 year old hen. There is one other pullet who isn't yet laying and the other 3 are all almost 2...looking forward to them all producing eggs soon. They are a mellow and sensible bunch...2 Dorkings a Del and a Chocolate Barred Rock along with the two NH girls. I am glad they have such nice temperaments.

That is a real fear of mine--making a flood during the drought. Also, we are on a meter now.
