Do you think that this design will work well with fermented feed?
It sounds like the designer is using dry feed.
I was comparing it to @PetRock 's dry feeder made out of 4" pipe.

I do think it would work for fermented feed though--as long as the feed was wet enough to flow under the curve of the exit pipe.

I know that many people use those feeders without a problem, but I wanted to let you know about a friend's experience with those feeders. She had a young bird suffocate in a feeder of that design. She found it, head down, stuck inside.
It wouldn't be a problem for larger, older birds.
My feeders are 3 in pipes and I put a block in at the bottom of the V so the feed doesn't sit in the bottom and get old. It probably would also help prevent the problem that your friend had. I have fed hundreds of birds with these feeders with no problems. I do have them up higher so they work best for chickens that are 14-15 weeks and older. I use chick feeders or open bowls for the younger chicks. Sometimes freak accidents happen. My friends use open buckets to water some of the chickens at the farm. It works fine for the bigger birds but we lost 2 teenagers one year when they went head down in the bucket and couldn't get back out.

Yeah my only problem with the pipes have been when my tops have been uncovered during the rain.

I'm working on making modifications to the coop to eliminate this problem. As far as fermented feed I don't think the bucket would work that well but it would work great for dry feed. (too wet and will ooze out the hole, not wet enough and will clump and mold)

I use a set of rotating dog bowls to deliver my mash (have too much trouble with keeping the fermented feed good) I got a bunch from the dollar store.

I learned over this winter that i need better drainage in the run and I need a system to fodder/forage feed them too. Lots of coop improvements coming this year.

I've been following this thread for awhile--not done anything about it, mind, but still... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/931194/fermented-feed-feeder
Thanks for the link!

Turns out there must be more hiding spots in the coop than I thought--Cookie was in there when I went in to feed this morning

Yea! Glad she's ok.

Well, the guy from The Chicken Fountain gave me an idea for "cleaning out the valve" that didn't work and he has not responded to my email saying that idea didn't fix the problem. So at the moment I am pretty ticked off and disappointed. If I wanted a waterer I had to check and manually refill, I could have spend $10, not $80.

In a few weeks Im going to be ordering Barred Holland eggs from a few breeders. I know a few of you have mentioned you might like some of these guys just let me know via PM and I'll be sure to put you on a list.

This is a really endangered breed and from all reviews makes a really great back yard bird in most situations. I have not been able to find a quality breeder west of the Mississippi so I really want to bring them out here.
