California - Northern

Hi all,

This may be a shot in the dark but I am hoping someone here can offer some advice.

We just recently got a few baby chicks to raise. I am having pretty bad allergic reaction to them (the brooder is in our house and I cannot be in the same room at this point). I am looking to rehome them to someone in the Bay Area or is there a hatchery or farm that might take them? I am not comfortable shipping them, so somewhere/someone local is a must.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I don't have any advice for you but I have some chicks to rehome as well so I am curious if anyone else has a suggestion. I was planning to post on here or try craigslist, but I think I remember @HighStreetCoop mentioning there is a place that will take heritage breed chicks/cockerels? I am definitely ready to downsize with my chicks here! 4 bantam orpington cockerels here in case anyone wants one, 2 blue & 2 black. I'll have a few more chicks available soon too, as soon as I know what the genders of the smallest 3 are.

WooHoo a neighbor! I would be interested in a standard game. I think they are beautiful birds. Or even a mix. there is a lday here in Westwood that has a beautiful rooster that Iay ask if she hatches any of her eggs.
Dogs! That is an issue here in Westwood. Fortunately our lab lets us know if a dog or raccoon or skunk come in the yard.
it hurts i came home from school and my dad told me and i walked out looking at the cage and just broke down crying.. i will probably never find a serama the same color as that hen she was gorgeous

im in lake almanor not many people have game bantams up here

and a sad thing happened.. someones dog ours or my neighbors got into my serama coop.. i lost both birds from kate..

That is not just so sad but downright unnecessary. One shouldn't keep birds that are not securely housed, penned, or yard-safe. Should you happen to have time the BYC thread titled "post your chicken coop pictures here" talks a lot about the best ways to secure chickens whether on a high or a low budget. There are about 300-400+ pages of posts showing coops and discussing flock security often - peruse these a few at a time and you will find so many of us that have lost or almost lost our birds to inappropriate security. I had two stray mutts break our fence gate and attack our chicken coop and if not for a good neighbor who chased the mutts we would've lost our first birds. A lot of us have been where you are and it caused us to beef up our flock security. Dogs are notorious bird chasers - it's a thrill for dogs - they can't help themselves. Years ago we had a Rottweiler that couldn't help chasing Mourning Doves to death in spite of obedience training. Hope you enjoy the "post your chicken coop pictures here" thread! It is one of my favourites and I learned so much.
