California - Northern

Its funny to see chicks(almost 7 weeks) integrated into my layer flock. Since mama buff orp abandoned them but they have not abandoned her exactly I reintegrated her back into the flock and let the babies come too. They are funny they are not nearly as afraid of the big chickens as some of the other young birds have been in the past. The only time anyone bothers them in the flock is when they try to ninja treats.

Im very curious about typical male behavior with chicks. My Pita boy seems to protect everyone in the flock chicks included. Even though my buff and her babies were not with the flock while they were being raised. (They had their own small coop and had more free range access) He is such a good boy though. When she was first going broody he would sleep by her. I also have group that loves to sleep on the ledge and he sleeps with them. (It is my half blind girl and her bed buddy)

Im really hoping he will stay this way as he ages he doesnt show an aggressive move towards anyone entering the run. The hens will squat for me and let me pet them and handle them and he doesnt even bat an eye.

Having the babies in the run with all the other girls gives me an opportunity to tame them a bit. Ive only had them in the run with the flock for a couple of days so far but they will not run from me as much as they used to.

Im having a blast too bad the roo will have to go soon. (Well not for him he gets a new flock of female pitas to look after)

I want to send a shout out to all of our NorCal members who might be struggling with one of the various fires burning in California. I hope you are all safe and I really hope you are able to manage with your animals. So sad.

So glad for the rain today. Cooler temps plus now we can breathe. Our air has been nasty, sporting events canceled from college level to rec due to bad air quality. My chickens finally get a cool break.

We got a smattering here at our house in west Fairfield but my hubby says it came down decently for a bit out where he was working in the Suisun Marsh. Such a pleasant break from the heat and hopefully helped the firefighters a bunch.

We only got a few sprinkles here but the sunset was gorgeous!
