Ive got a bid on a trio of breeding American breese up for auction from Greenfire farms! :D
Wish me luck!
Oh and we culled the blue orpington and 3 silver laced Brahma chicks last night.
Amy Beth I read your post and you made me feel like I had to also be super responsible and not risk further infections. I saved 1 of the chicks to send into UC Davis to FINALLY know what it was.
I do feel bad though. They were some of my favorite chicks. And I really wanted to grow out the silver laced brahmas.
But hopefully I win this auction for the Breese!
Hope everyone is having a nice breezy cool day :D.

Good luck on your bid..:) so exciting ;)
If you don't win the auction. I have Breese, chocolate orp and jubilees. I will be selling fertile eggs and chicks in the near future... Molly ;)

This is definitely a girl. I'd agree that is doesn't really look like a marans, so it may be one of your mixes.

Probably one of your mixes as well, definitely not a BCM. If anything, it's marked more like a poor version of a birchen.

Amy, in the future if you want to try BCM again. Mine are starting to lay well, I threw in one egg as a tester in the last hatch and it's walking around this morning happy, healthy and feathered little legs. I do drive through Redding every February on my way to Oregon, I could always hatch some out for you. Or you might have broodies by then. My line has turned out very nicely and did well at their first show. I currently have one or two extra cockerels.

Thank you for the support Molly.
Might I ask what type of Breese you have? And are you Chocolate Orps LF? I'll definitely get eggs from you when their ready! Keep me posted.

Well said Ron. Sorry for you MonsterClucker. You definitely don't want to risk your other birds. Good luck on the necropsy!
You are definitely right! Thank you also for the support!
American Breese... Yes, LF chocolate orps ;). My jubilee will be the first to lay.
Soo cool! Where did you get the Choc Orps? Are they Ramsley line or a project choc LF? Yes please let me know when your jubes lay. I will definitely get whatever's available lol. Your Breese. Are they white, black, or grey? And did you get them from Greenfire farms? You have some cool birds Miss Molly! Look at this sunset from the other night... Looks like the sky is on Fire! Have a good morning everyone!

OK, for everyone's information. New American Poultry has upped there minimum fee to $50 and the processing fee to $2.75 per chicken. So, you'd need roughly 18 chickens to get that price. I've got 10, anyone else in the area have another 5-8 chickens that you want to get processed. We could go in togehter...
Is anyone interested in going in on rooster processing this wed or Thursday? My husband is going up for work and we were thinking of doing this. We have 6 for sure roosters, but could push it to 9 or so if we are close, but don't have 18. If this doesn't happen he is going to start self processing Sunday. ( so that's my deadline!) but he is going to skin them. I want chickens with skin if I can get them!

And Ron, you are a total geek. I vote for calling in non rooster breeder fever, the worst kind! Did those Marans not hatch? I'm going to have to start keeping track of what makes them hatch the best, they are pickier eggs then the silkies.

How is everyone else this morning? We have started getting clouds again every morning, its so pretty with the muted light out my office window. Zoo, I'm also happy to hatch marans for you if you decide to go back to that breed.

Deb, are you going to Paso Robles? The partridge silkies are ready to go, but I think the Iowa blue is too young to put in the car.

How exciting for you. Just one thought, make sure you get back the necropsy before you add any more chickens (especially $400 ones). You want to make sure everything is cleaned up properly and you're not risking the new ones.

Amy Beth, this is just sad. What horrible luck to have this mold after spending all that money.
When I lost all 20+ chickens, except my roo, to a predator 2 years ago, I really considered forgetting the whole chicken thing. And I had chickens on and off over a 30 year period. But with encouragement here and from my friends, I incubated the eggs I collected from those chickens and started over. I still look forward to new chicks and figuring out who they came from. You'll soon have smooth sailing and this bumpy start will be a distant memory that you'll use to someday encourage someone else who is having a trying time.
On the molting, they'll start laying again this year. I'm starting to get more eggs as they start looking better. My Polish have quit all together and they're some of my most consistent layers, but I had a team meeting with them tonight and I think they agreed to get back to work...well, all except Cher who pecked me...I think she's filing a grievance. I'll counter with physical abuse and I think she'll be back on board! ;D
The Orps have fared rather well for me so I am encouraged with that. :D We will see how the EEs and Bantams do too. I will need some good laying, heat tolerant non-broody breeds for the spring. I seem to have really good luck with buying started pullets lol.
sorry Amy Beth
Thanks!
That is so kind of you. I will keep that in mind for sure. Having a good laying BCM was a hope of mine when I first started all this. I am happy I have 2 decent cockerels. Watching them feather out is fun. I just love how BCM roosters look. They are so darn handsome to me. I think one of them has a DQ comb though - looks like he has tiny sprig growing off one of his main comb sprigs. But they are handsome enough for my Olive Egger project for now.

Thanks everyone for listening to my whine. Hopefully I have some strong healthy chickens make it through the Fall and Winter and Spring brings new things (and chickens) for us. :D
