When I went to the Heirloom expo, Chiquita gave me some hatching eggs. They hatched last week and I have 5 nice little chicks. A couple days ago my 13 year old asked if she could pick up the one that looked like a duck. I said What? You know the one without feathers on the Neck.

Do I have a Show Girl?
Looks like you have a Naked Neck (Turken), although it does appear to have feathers on it's feet. It could be a showgirl, but it has an awful lot of normal feathers on it's wings.

This is my Earlene at about six weeks.

I wish I could get over my issue with eating my own chickens. Last spring, I gave away 20-50 roosters a month to a man is Sebastopol who grew em out and processed them. I am not a vegetarian so I really don't know what my hang up is with eating my own chickens. Rationally I know eating our own chickens is better than supporting the commercial operations where chickens are inhumanely raised and processed but still I buy my chickens at the grocery store.

I have been contemplating getting some Freedom Rangers, hoping that knowing their fate from the start will help but am afraid I will not be able to go through with the processing.

Im curious, are there any other non-vegitarians on this board that have not eaten their own chickens. Maybe we can start a 12 step program. LOL

this is super-late in the conversation, but have you contacted Bud's Meats here in Penngrove re: processing? a friend who grew pigs last year had them butchered at Bud's -- i took interest as it's just down the hill from where i live...

best,
laura

Oh my gosh I am dying of cuteness - I want her!! That looks like a Naked Neck chicken! I want some of those so bad but everyone here thinks they are ugly! That kinda looks like an emu or ostrich! hehe

Hey Ron just wanted to show you (and everyone else) these pics I took yesterday before I forget. They are 2 of Drae's kids I kept. They both have 5 toes and it looks like the toe is upside down? Looks like a thumbs up! Lol

Just gotta say that my favorite part about having chickens again is them forcing me to get up early :)

CUTE PUP! I have one kind of like that. Hes about 1.5 years old now and a total pansy dog. He looks scary in photos but he is just a big cuddly love. He is useless for guarding lol He was a cute puppy.
