Here is what ascitis looks like. See how swollen her abdomen is and how far down it hangs. If you looked closely from behind, you could see skin between the feather shafts. Also, she started collecting a lot of poop on her rear from the swelling. She was a black copper marans.

Hmmm, this could be what it is....she's finishing molt so she's lost feathers back there, so I don't have to see between the feathers and she has collected poop. I had to wash her off last week. Physically I don't think it's as noticeable, more that she's so heavy but I'll go look at her again. It's been going on for about a week so I'm thinking it's not an egg.....I felt around her abdomen this morning and couldn't feel an egg, she's just solid and it seemed to make her uncomfortable. How long before your chicken died? I take it there's nothing I can do...

Ascites is fluid buildup in the abdomen. But internal laying (egg yolk perotonitis) can also cause swelling in the abdominal area. Has she been laying?

Here is a great article on ascites:

Here is a thread on abdominal swelling due to internal laying:

My hen lived fine for over a year like this. You can drain the fluid, but I decided to not put her through that. She did not die from the ascites - a bobcat tried to grab her and tore a gaping hole in the back of her neck because she was so heavy, it couldn't carry her off. She died from her wound.

YAY Happy monday!

Construction starts today on our house :) Estimated to last 2 weeks. They will be doing a wide variety of things around the house, but today is dry wall repair. I can't wait! Although I don't really care to have strange men in my house while I'm studying, its worth it :D

I am hoping we get snow this year. This area got about 2-3 feet last year or the year before. We found a google photo of our property when it was snowing and it was so pretty!

On a side note, my chicks are so annoying. I have 7 of them in the dog room right now and I wish our barn electricity wasn't so sketchy because then I could put them in the barn with their heat lamp.

Anyway...I climbed into our big oak tree yesterday and a big barn owl flew out! He is so pretty :)
where do you live?
