Ascites is fluid buildup in the abdomen. But internal laying (egg yolk perotonitis) can also cause swelling in the abdominal area. Has she been laying? Here is a great article on ascites: http://www.thepoultrysite.com/articles/500/understanding-and-controlling-ascites Here is a thread on abdominal swelling due to internal laying: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/362422/drained-a-hens-abdomen-rest-in-peace-olivia-11-5-10/0_50 My hen lived fine for over a year like this. You can drain the fluid, but I decided to not put her through that. She did not die from the ascites - a bobcat tried to grab her and tore a gaping hole in the back of her neck because she was so heavy, it couldn't carry her off. She died from her wound.
Hmmmm, my hens skin was a lot more red (almost feverish looking, but it was in it's later stages), but hers was more severe. Has your girl had any laying issues? (obviously she's molting now, but before?)
I hope you get it figured out! It's not fun playing the guess the disease game.Well, when the chicks started hatching it threw everyone off. Then I sold one of the hens so that left with with only two layers since the other one was the broody, then they quit when molt started so I haven't worried about anything until the last few days when I noticed she was keeping to herself and then I picked her up and she was so heavy. After looking at her again, her feathers on the rest of her have come back so the bare butt could be related to whatever is going on.She got up on the roost herself but she spent the day under the coop except when I came out to check on her she came out to me but went back under and then went it to go to bed. But I haven't gotten an egg from this pen in about 2 weeks or more.![]()
Thanks for the links btw.
I did my calender voting- I swear there were some in there more than once? Two of my images made it to this round- woot!! I swear I recognized some others...didn't some of you enter?
lmbo!! you saw them too! i squealed!! They STILL run around like a little gossip girl duo. They are so inseparable. I would hate it if something happened to one- the other would be devastated. I do plan on hatching some eggs from them so hopefully one of them will go broody so they can bond with some of their offspring and not be alone if one of the duo dies or something. Besides the bantams, the 2 BCM roosters we are keeping- the EEs are the only other chickens we view as pets. All the others are nameless. If you win, then getting those EEs from me was a big win!

Kind of quiet tonight, guess everyone's off voting. Loved all three of these shots! Amy Beth, the gossiping girls are my favorite! I know you could sell it to a card company!Quote:
I saw both your pics! Loved them. I was pleasantly surprised by how many EE photos there were. You have to let us know when they start laying and what color eggs you get. My EE is one of my best layers, right up there with the leghorn, sex link, and New Hampshire.
I put one silly pic into the contest (BO pullet head peeking out from under two other pullets roosting). Just wanted to share it, but never thought it would be selected for the voting round. I was shocked!
