California - Northern

I woke up this morning to a sick chicken. She has some yellow nasal discharge, slight wheezy sound, and seems to smell a little more than usual. I found her sitting on the roost and she was not interested in treats at all which is very atypical of this girl. The only medications that I have on hand are Sulmet and Denagard. If you had to choose, which one would you use? I know that I could post this on the emergencies/diseases thread but I know that I'll hear back from the members on this thread.

When I read your post, infectious coryza, slow spreading, 20% mortality popped into my head..

Watch them closely and if one even sneezes get them to Quarantine!

Hopefully you caught it early.

Hi Jeff,

I have a Broody EO Marraduna Basque Hen. She has been sleeping in the nest box for more than 3 days. She is on the nest each time I check too. She did get off and eat this morning, but she is back on the nest and did not get off for the cabbage treat.

Would it be ok to put a couple of the eggs I am hatching for you under her? I would wait until lockdown just to make sure she is really broody.

All of the eggs except the Jubilee Orps and 2 of the 6 CLs are going strong. There are 4 EEs and a bunch of silkies. I don't want to put anything precious under her like the Rhodebars or Swedish Flower Hens.

Thank you for the advise, Cheryl & Ron! I guess my "problems" started 3 days ago with my oldest hen, the Barred Rock in my avatar, had an swollen eye. She had no other symptoms but I put her in quarantine and treated her eye with Vetericyn. The next day, her face on that side was swollen so I cleaned with with a saline solution and massaged the swollen area. Clear liquid came out of her nostril on that side. I dosed her again with Vetericyn and started her on Denagard in her water. The next day, the swelling was down and her eye was open. She is foraging on my fenced in patio area and I'm still treating her eyes with Vetericyn and she is getting Denagard in her water. I thought maybe she just got something in her eye or nasal passage. Then today, on day 3 of Pet's problems, I found Astrid, my favorite Isbar pullet, just sitting on the roost instead of out foraging. When she didn't come for treats, I knew that she was sick. I am treating her with Denagard for now since Pet responded really well to that treatment. I am hoping that what she has is just a variation of what Pet has. I have her inside in a dog kennel and I am also misting her with Oxine. My fingers are crossed that she will recover.
