I have some of that Ultra Kibble. I would like to fix the chickens a special meal once a day with- to be eaten at that meal. I know it has soy in it- bleh so few options here in Redding for chicken feed. Every seems to carry standard stuff. Weird! But thought I would give it a try. It says 1 cup feed per 1 TB UK. For a meal for 4 chickens- would 1 cup + 1 TB be adequate or too much (they are cockerels and they can chow!)? And separately how much would be ideal for my coop crew (11 pullets, 2 cockerels)? Just for a meal a day. I will still offer them free choice pellets as usual. What I want to avoid is a lot of waste. My birds seem to do a really good job foraging- they seem forage almost nonstop from 7am- to dusk and taking siestas together periodically. I just want to give them something a little extra. I would also like to add some flaxseed...should I feed it whole or grind it up and put it in the food?

Thanks!

Ok and those 'BOSS' seeds...how often do you guys offer those? Big Lots sells them (I saw another chicken farmer buying tons of them and talking to the checker quietly that this was his secret place to get them because they were so cheap) and I don't think he realized a fellow chicken person was in line hehe. Nice sized bags for just a few bucks. Jeff- please leave some bags for me if you read this and want to go get some (and if that was you in line that would be hilarious! haha)! hehe

For a snack, mix 1# of Ultra Kibble with 10# of oats. Use a hanging feeder or they will scatter the grains trying to get to the ulta kibble. I alternate this with their layer pellets.

Since you have free rangers, toss out several hand fulls of BOSS a day. They really do not need that much of it. They love it though and is very good for them. It is not a fee replacement and is prone to Meal Worms so keep in in a sealed container.

Perfect- thank you!

Do you have any thoughts on the flax seed? Grind it or leave it whole? Maybe mix it in with the snack mix?

Mix it in whole. Gizzards will grind those seeds up. Next time you process a Roo, cut open the gizzard.
bahahah Already have. Gizzards are one of the my favorite things to eat from a chicken. yes I am weird. I was SO excited to taste a fresh chicken gizzard. Dude. Crazy good and so much more tender than the stores AND a zillion times more flavorful. I butterfly them and pull the lining out, and simmer with the rest of the giblets. I eat the gizzard as soon as they are done. YUM! It's crazy what's in those gizzards. Grass sometimes, always stones, their feed. We have fun looking to see what their 'last supper' was. haha!

It will be fun to do this when they eat seeds though to see how much it is processed!

Oh and one more cream legbar question. Do they lay the same, better or less than EEs?

Excuse my typos. Sent from my iPhone.
For my first summer and fall, my legbars and easter eggers pretty much lay the same and stopped about the same time but it's my first season with them, so we will see how next year goes.

I hope they start laying soon.

I miss the blue eggs.
