Quote: The trick is to order early from them. The 2013 catalog is not out yet so you either have to go by the 2012 catalog or wait until the new one is ready. Jason(Cooper12) said to order in January and expect the chicks in March.

I am worried about the replacement policy though. I don't want to order Hollands and get Favorelles or Polish(lovely chickens!)

That would be frustrating for sure! I wonder why the big delay?

Quote: If you look back at the post with the description from their catalog, at the end you will see (10). That is the amount they hatch on average of that breed per hatch. You have to wait in a que until they have the ones you want are ready for shipment, so for rare breeds it can take some time to get them. Some breeds are sold out very quickly each year. Others may have hatch problems and can't be filled so they offer substitutions. McMurray has the same problem with SG Dorkings.

Oh ok. I knew there was a reason- just wasn't sure of what it was.

Sooo Ron...out of curiosity...how many chickens do you have now? :D

Quote: I will have a lot less when I send some home with PapaBrooder! Those chicks are crazy funny! Also your Showgirl and the two Silkies that I hatched from the eggs Chiquita sent me home with. (ok, did that sentence make any sense? Amy Beth, I am sending 3 Juvenile chicks to you when Jeff picks up his chicks)

What I am working on now is rehoming the older hens. Oh, and I will be working on Chicken Dinner soon too. I have 5 cockerels and yesterday I was checking to see if they are ready yet - getting close!

When the Small Animal Exchange opens up for the new year I will be taking some BAs and BRs there. Maybe a couple of my Dorking Crosses too.

What do you guys think? http://www.facebook.com/Egg.Carton.Labels.by.ADozenGirlz

She posted about tossing treats on the ground and it being a no no. I toss oats and things on the ground for my chickens. I don't want to put it in a bowl. They would gobble it too fast. I usually toss it on the ground on low traffic areas. Meaning I don't toss it in their hang outs. I toss it in an area that I feel needs aerated. I just never really concerned myself with that since we let them roam over 2 acres...with access to 4 but they seldom wander that far.

I think you are correct about this. If they are outside, they are going to eat off of the ground even in the places where they hang out. Mimi, my SG Dorking Pullet chomps down on the Pine shavings! They eat stuff out of their own poo!

They eat un digested grains out of House Manure! And guess what? That is what they are supposed to do and it make the best tasting eggs. It's the same with pigs and is why Humans have had both Pigs and Chickens living with them for thousands of years. They take care of things we call "waste" and turn it into high quality food!

Gotta love em

OMG, people worry too much over silly things. Where do these sissy people come from? This is the type of thinking that led to factory farm poultry being locked up in a sterile environment.

Chickens are healthier foraging for part of their diet and that involves eating off the ground.

FWIW, I have not even fed my chickens medicated starter or feed for many years. They run around in horse, cattle, sheep & pig manure. I've never had a single case of coccidiosis with any of my animals, in the 12 years that I've had this ranch.
