California - Northern

Here are a few quick shots from my hatch this weekend.

A blue showgirl (although she refused to lift her head enough to show off her neck, she more looks like a silkie in this pic)

Look at the cute red face on this serama chick

And by far, the smallest serama chick I've ever hatched! (that's a 9 volt battery for size comparison)

That baby is TINY!

Deb, that tiny one is so cute. I hatched a Cream Legbar like that once. It took forever for her to grow. She was so tiny, I had to hold here back with new hatches for like a month...great pictures Deb...

Quote: Once my chickens are of any size I haven't had a problem with hawks....and I do have white chickens. But I seem to loose one of the new chicks here and there but the rest of the flock learn really quick to head the roos warnings from then on. It's amazing to watch when the roos sees something overhead, makes his warning call and every runs for cover!
Quote: Not in my glass studio but we don't know if the hardwood in the dance studio is ruined. We pulled the carpet in the front of her studio after sucking as much water out of it as we could.

Our son and his family bought a new house and was going to rent out their old one.....I think it was a total loss. They were only out of this house for a couple of months! I constantly worried about them if we had any wind. Thank God they were out!

Here is a photo. We stapled the runner along the top a few inches above the nest box.
Thanks for the pic! That will work and doesn't look bad.

Good thinking! ... and cute chick pics, too.

Wow on all the photos of damage from the storm. That really was a bad one. I especially cringed at the sight of those wet hardwood floors and that cute little house. Did the tree go completely into the interior of that house? Was that in Paradise?

wow, just wow.
I guess its the 3 days, the first 2 storms loosen the trees, and the next one finished them off. I'm glad no one was hurt in any of the falling trees. Bummer about the house and fence, however.
Also if anyone is ever wondering, DO NOT DE 14 chickens inside.

Of all the chicken things I had to do this weekend, this one did not amuse Mario.

We had super son of speedy stew last night, and it was still excellent. Marans have wonderful flavor.

I only have trouble with the silkies and hawks. We have a mother that brings her babies down to learn to hunt right behind us every year. CD's and cover will only do so much against a family. Speaking of it, once this next storm is over ill have to put the cd's back out again. I'm sure they are mostly blown down.

While I do love weather, I'm glad this particular storm series is over, everything I own was sodden.

Daily Digest for 12-2-2012.

The Northern CA thread was the sixth busiest thread yesterday!
Waititout had the sixth highest ovation post yesterday!

Digest:

It was wet, wet, wet in the morning. Wind blew down trees and rain poured. Older coops, so old they were possibly made in a cave needed to be checked on(not me. I am not going out there now) but running is not advised.

Lawatt posted a petition link to protest the closing of Drakes Bay Oyster Farm. Chiquita is having her mother spam the link out so provided it makes it past the spam filters there should be thousands of signatures soon(Go petition!).

Chiquita wants to use her 600 egg incubator to hatch eggs for Cheryl. Also, there are bugs in Silkieland but Chiquita has a plan of action…Coops have been fortified too! Marans eat like Hoovers and get large crops like the Orps. Everyone needs Silkies! 600 of them at a time?

This thread was number 7 on 12-1-2012!

The weather front passed by more of us as the morning progressed. Zooweemama lost trees and the coop flooded again!

Ronott1 and Chiquita have battery backups for their incubators and brooders. Either Scouts, always prepared or chicken obsessed?

Spouses have been very supportive this weekend. Some are good enablers, but this weekend they fixed roofs, patched coops and even moved roosters in the middle of the night without complaining!

MonsterClucker lost a bunch of chickens and a Turkey Poult to Hawks, but found out that shiny spinney things will keep them away.

Zooweemama FB Friends Parents had something break in and kill most of her chickens. Weird was used to describe it. An Uncle is moving out spent chickens that will spend some time as companions with the survivor. Other might spend some time in a stock pot.

Miss Mollys DH was not so helpful but Jersey said he was probably making sure Molly was not drowning in the downpour. That was thoughtful at least and showed that he cares.

Cooper 12 is planning his space and his flock. He is also planning on what he will do with the new place. Flower Hens and jaerhorns are being considered. Miss Molly has Jaerhorns!

BigDaddysMom had a flood in Paradise! They spent the day cleaning up an Art and a Dance studio. PapaBrooder had a close call with one of his coops. It should be named Ark De Coop.

A new photo for the 2013 was probably posted by Zooweemama. Beautiful Buff Orpingtons!
