California - Northern

I have been trying to catch up on this forum lol! A lot to go through since I last visited . Hope you all have no problems with the weather. Looks like tomorrow will be the worst for us. the chickies had to stay in their coop today. They didnt seem to mind much. Had to go out and pick up a couple new pullets at the post office in the rain. Got there and the whole bottom of the shipping box was wet.. wet soaked up about 4" up the sides of the box as well, ugh... I was happy to find the girls inside still dry and comfy but it really looked like the box had been set in a puddle! I also shipped a little Cockerel off on Monday and was happy he arrives safely today in Texas. These are my two new girls

Nice looking fluffies!!!! I've been trying soo hard to keep my daughter (age 4) from seeing silkies...If she saw one that looked like the cotton puff in the bottom picture....I would be in big trouble. LOL.

Have a home in Fairfield, Solano County and have always considered it Northern. Half the time they don't even include us as Bay Area. Now days I just say, Near Napa.

They are great for kids lol! A while back I sold a couple to a family with 3 little girls and they came back and got 3 more , Dad picked out one HE wanted that time lol!

Beautiful girls, where did you get them? I'm particularly fond of partridge, I have some in lockdown right now.

Deb, I got the from Karen Larson. I love partridge!! Im looking or some quality blacks... my other favorite color!

Monster - my friend Mary bought hose same coops. With the open fronts, she has been dealing with super early crowing. Depending how rural you are, it may not be a huge issue.
I would put some hardware cloth to protect them. I once had a raccoon pull a fully grown Orp through a 1 inch by 2 inch opening - piece by piece. It was not pretty.
mine like to crow in a closed coop as early as 4:30

hardware cloth is a good idea for sure. Maybe even weedblock under the hardwarecloth. sand over the top. I would get the wood off the ground some to . maybe bury some concrete blocks. . keep it 1/2 inch off the dirt.

Nice coops! I agree with Ron, put some 3/4 inch hardware cloth under the coops. Also I would suggest replacing the original wire with 3/4 inch hardware cloth. It keeps vermin and wild birds out.

Good luck!
Pics of the new coops!

Here you can see the hoop coops on the left and right side of the 2 new coops. Eventually, all my breeders will be in the new style coop and the hoops will ne used for other holding places.
Also the fenced in run on the left hand side hoop coop, will be on every coop. I put together another one today in the storm lol

Curious Basque chickens checking out the new coops!

The nest boxes are really nice. They have a reflective insulated cover to keep warmth in and reflect off the sun rays.
And there latches on both sides to make sure no egg thieving is going on!

I had him put the door and nest boxes on the same side thinking I could place the coops horizontal facing with a run in the other side, but seeing how the weather comes from the southwest, which would have blown rain into the coops. I just placed them facing long ways to have the fully protected side facing southwest.

And here's the inside. Nest boxes to the left, roost to the right. I'm gonna have to build another roost on that back wall and cut a chicken door below it.
I like them a lot. What'd ya guys think?
Any suggestions? Criticism? Scrutiny?
I'm trying to come up with a pretty final idea on my housing situation So I would appreciate ANY food for thought.
Thanks
Mike

Oh wow! Nice! Is she happy with them? Or is early crowing a problem for her? I'm pretty far out and I havemt had any complaints, yet. But I don't mind that. How has she handled them crowing so early? I'm definitely gonna reinforce with hardware cloth, for sure. I could have had him put it on for a extra $50.
She hasn't had them but about a month. She took care of most of the crowing by enclosing more of the coop. The down side is it made them darker. She had them built with the hardware cloth and paid extra to have them built on a wooden platforms.

Here is a picture of how she set them up:

Yeah, but with our red dirt, they wouldn't be white long.
Quote: Mine crow about 5:30, but in an enclosed coop, you don't hear it much. In the open ended coop, it's like having a bullhorn.
