Their comb and wattles are cut off. It goes back to cockfighting. It removes the loose skin so the bird is less likely to be injured in a fight so they won't bleed from their injuries. I think show birds are dubbed because of their original purpose. It does give the birds a unique look. Females and cockerels can be shown, but I think even cockerels will be looked down on if they are uncut. I've watched it be done, because my son had a OEGB when he was in 4H.

If you are truly interested, look it up on youtube, but it is not for the squeamish.

And maybe your hens just think Foghorn is cute!

You said he's the main man, the girls apparently aren't prejudiced about his height!

Not much messes me up but I prefer to not alter animals in anyway except neuter/spaying. I left my pit bull's ears and tail alone. Although my husband does not share my sentitment- when we get a doberman- he wants the dog's ears and tail done. It's how dobes looked growing up so I think they look weird to him otherwise. I like the dobermans either way. I don't think i would want to cut any combs or wattles off just for looks. I love them. When I hold Gary (or huge Marans boy) I pet his wattle. teehehe!

The sun is shining!!!!! Gotta go out and get some sunshine while I can!!!

We just took advantage of the sunshine and went and picked up some lunch to take to the ocean. Huge swells.. it was beautiful today! Looking like we might still be dry here for a while.

They are such water gobblers. Love their tiny noises. They grow fast. See the runt...isn't she cute? All the tinies are girls and 1 of the bigger ones is a girl. The other 2 big ones are the boys. Shellie (Celtic Oaks) called to check on everything. That was SO incredible of her! Great service. She put grow gel in there with them. With the exception of the sleepy runt - everyone is very vigorous and active.

They were separated in the box. The big ones on one side/the littles on the other side. There was a divider in there.

The sun is playing peekaboo. It came out when we went out to get the ducklings, then dark again and now the sun is back out briefly.
