it has opened my eyes. That is for sure. I can appreciate the hawks but it has made me more aware. That's a good size chicken yard! I'm sorry you are having horrible issues with predation. This bites! Now I have to google Jarehorns. LOL
wow that is close. Glad we are done for awhile. I heard another small storm Tuesday but then dry for awhile.
Whoa Nelly! Now I know why we have a pond. It's a natural dip in our property and would likely fill up with rain anyway. I am glad it didn't get your coop!!

I like the part about jaerhorns not being flighty. I wonder about how they will do in the heat, though that may not be a problem for you if you move up the mountain. The Swedish Flower Hens are a Land Race breed, so they are tough little work horses, like the EO Basque. I was looking at the Holland; they lay nice white eggs too. Hendersons chicken chart says: The calm white-egger.
can be broody
cold hardy
moderately slow maturing
Established in 1949, after about 15 years of breeding experiments, as an improved Lamona, in other words, a yellow skinned meat bird that laid white eggs. The main improvement was it was heavier than the Lamona. One breed used had been imported from Holland, but other American breeds, including the Lamona, were mixed in as well. The White and Barred varieties were developed simultaneously, but different combinations of breeds were used.
Unknown in Holland & most of the rest of world. There is speculation that White Hollands have faded out of existence.
Good luck finding them. My pet chicken says they can't find a place that sell them.
Wait! I just remembered that Megan has Pita Pinta chickens! They lay a cream colored egg.
next week I plan on converting my 5x3 grow up pen into another small chicken coop. I plan on building another small covered run and will put my two white empordanesa in there until I can hopefully hatch more or get another rooster. They are in a semi closed run with the big coop but I am still worried something will get them.
This is the plan as I redefine my flock. Eventually I will still have open runs once I move except the white empordanesa. I may partially cover them but plan on having larger 25x75 chicken yards and keep a few roosters with 12 hens of the main varieties. ( white empordanesa , crele ,black and partridge penedesenca
I will let the breeder culls be with my layer flock which I think will still include Blue and Black Ameraucana's and whatever culls I have with my crele partridge or black penedesenca.
I will probably not keep the white empordanesa culls as I do not want to attract anymore hawk attention. I am sure other breeds will make there way into the layer flock.
Like Jersey Giants , Sweedish Flower Hens and possibly Jarehorns.
Who knows.
