Wondering if anyone is thinking of showing at the Huboldt or Red Bluff shows?
They are just as close as any OR show for me.

I know it is early but I will need to find out what I need to get them over the border and find out if any of the kids are interested in showing.

I've been checking out the Meet thread and haven't seen anything on them yet.

Stockton is just to far for me when coop-out is factored in. Husband is not fond of chicken chores other than collecting eggs, and if they even growl at him he just leaves them.

Sorry it always makes me laugh when a chicken growls at me. When I tell people that my RIR Candy Corn growls at me they do not believe me! Dogs growl not chickens...I ask them if they were the one listening to the noise that crazy chicken was making?

Zooweemama is thinking about showing at the RB show. I am thinking about it but will probably think about it too long and miss a deadline...

Morning all! I'm wondering if you may know of some dedicated 4H kids in my Northern CA area that would want to help with washing etc and getting the birds ready for shows. I'm suffering too much with leg nerve pain to participate in the upcoming shows if I can't find some great helpers.
Check with the local UC Extension office. They should be able to put you in touch with local poultry leaders.

Great Idea

Hmmm so I see a certain behavior from my roosters. Gary (marans) sometimes when I let him out of his little coop (he and Chief are housed separately from the other coop chickens) he walks sideways towards me with a wing dropped. I reach out and grab and pet him lol. (not afraid of sassy roosters) He's never bitten or scratched or anything. Well he and Chief do this SAME thing to the pullets before they try to mate them. So is Gary trying to boss me around or mate me? lmbo!!

Ron, the fuzzy chickens are all well. We still have them inside the house. I won't be putting them outside until the coop is done. Motivation for my husbands. ;) But they are inside in a large tub happy as clams. The Show Girl is hilarious. He hops up and roosts on the side of the tub staring down at the ducks. He never hops OUT of the tub to walk around though. If the kids grab the girls out and go take them into the livingroom he pops out of the tub and watches us from the other room. When we bring the girls back and drop them off- he hops back in like everything is ok again.

I am thinking of actually building (or buy lol) them a tiny little sleeping 'coop' near the house. Lots of places to hang out around the house and hide and it's away from the other chickens. Then I don't have to worry about a roo/hen count either. :D

Ope and I have 7 Orp girls laying age (1 still has pale comb and is quarantined and being treated for cocci) and we have 4 eggs so far this morning from them. :D I can't tell the other Orps eggs and which hen they belong to but I always know a Betty egg. So I can at least keep track of hers and how many/often she lays. I wish her eggs were a tad darker though since she has 1/2 marans. Oh well. She makes a pretty faux Orp!

Hope everyone gets some eggs today!

This Thread was the sixth busiest thread yesterday!

The rain missed most of the North State last night, with rain falling at about Elk Grove South. It should be a nice afternoon today for all of us!

It rained like heck in the foothills on the Hwy 50 corridor last night. It started around 7pm and was still raining when I fell asleep around 2am. Everything is wet and drippy here this morning, but hopefully it's done now for a few days.

I will most likely be at both (along with Stockton). I'm just thinking about my entries for Stockton now, I think it closes on 1/7, but don't quote me on that.

That sounds like the dance they do for the hens! Gary likes you a lot.

They do a different thing before they attack you.

You will know the difference.

In all fairness to hubby I understand. While working on the door to our second coop he ran the tip of his right thumb through the table saw. It has been 3 years and it is still funky, numb, tingely in the cold, etc.

My daughter used to afraid of our Dutch Bantam roo. I explained that it was like batteling a moth, she stood her ground and he came at her with his all. She looked up at me and laughed, he can occasionally get a shot in but not often. he's not much bigger than the OEGB. Not like taking on the big roos.

I don't have many that I would take to show, probably only 4 or 5 and only 1 is a lf but I'll have to see how she fills out.

I've got family outside of Redding, and I've driven Arcata and back and that's not to bad. If it's like past years I may know one of the judges and I really like him. Very willing to share info about what to look for in the different breeds, etc. Great with the kids too!

If I were closer to you I'd be happy to help :) (although I'm not a kid anymore lol)

I would love to go to the Humblodt show... I have to get more info. I dont know about the Red Bluff show... need to look that one up. I have never shown before so have no idea of time requirements etc. We have a hard time both being away from home for too long because of our dogs :( I think it is about 3 hours from me and the closest show I have found. I might wait until the summer show though.
