Yay, a woman that buys a freezer lamb from us every year has been bugging me for some more roosters. We just went out and sorted today, she's picking up 15 boys tomorrow morning. Her only question...................do you have more?

Sure I could put them in the freezer myself, but do I want to right now? No..............15 less boys to feed and add to the crowing around here.

We actually had problems with several pairs of Golden Eagles killing newborn baby calves when we used to run a large herd up in our foothills. They could actually pick up and fly short distances with the babies. Not fun.

Woohooo! That sounds awesome!

"My" bad hawk came back today too. He was stalking the chickens and hanging out in the trees around the coop. Thankfully my dogs were actually paying attention this time and were barking at the hawk. The dogs were standing at the coop between the hawk and the chickens. The chickens were all trying to get back to the coop, but some where trying to get UNDER my dogs. LOL.

I chased the hawk away and locked all the chickens in the run. As I chased the hawk away, I also gave my dogs lot of praise and pretended to bark and growl at the hawk. My dogs seem to take my actions as permission to go after the hawk. They chased it towards the far edge of the property and barked at it the whole time. What good girls:)

The hawk is missing quite a few feathers from it's wings. I wonder if it is moulting and having a harder time catching prey. I do hope it's a non-resident hawk and moves away soon.

The hen that got attacked awhile ago is still living in my brooder. Every time I handle her I seem to find more wounds the hawk made. She has 3 larger wounds the size of a quarter or bigger and many little punctures too. All the wounds are healing well and there's no sign of infection. She is sure tired of being cooped up and is developing quite an attitude each time I mess with her. She does settle down a lot quicker now when I hold her though.

My move to California has allowed me to train more with my dogs while avoiding the painful rheumatoid arthritis. Here is my sport competition dog Tain getting used to chickens in the yard. He is used to us going out to the chicken house and run back in Alaska. Now he has to share the yard with these crazy hens! Tain is the puppy in my avatar and as you can see he still have some epic ears.

I love police K9s! I am currently studying to become a training consultant for police K9 units in the US. I have tons of experience, for my age, under my belt and I have been working hard the past year to train dogs to high point titles in Schutzhund, PSA, and MondioRing. After I graduate I can work under another training consultant and start working on training scent detection. The sky is the limit! I actually started training my GSDs to search for chickens after I have a bear attack on my coop back in Alaska. I had to train him to air scent and find feathers and blood. From there I could track down missing alive birds, dead bird carcasses that needed to be cleaned up so they wouldn't attract more animals, and help me find the bear that killed the chickens. :)

Now I am training him to watch for hawks and raccoons and having him herd them into the run in case we see hawks. So far he is loving the work!

The Sour Cream pie crust is great for sweet pies, like pumpkin and etc.

I made the double crust version of the Lard pie crust this weekend for an Apple Pie. I used Leaf Lard(Thanks Kim!) It rolled out nicely.

This is a good Pecan Pie recipe!
