California - Northern

Oh my goodness you all have been busy! I don't think I can catch up. We had a good Christmas. I think I am more exhausted than anyone. I did a ton of cooking/baking. :) We had roast goose for Christmas supper. Very good. tastes nothing like turkey or chicken. I wouldn't even call it dark meat...it was like beef chicken. haha!

The chickens enjoyed the break today. My gorgeous Appleyard ducks got to hang out in the coop today. I am sure they enjoyed stretching their legs a bit from being in the brooder all the time. These guys feather very slow. The oldest ones are 7 weeks old and only half feathered. My last batch of ducks were completely feathered by 7 weeks and ready for the pond.

Our pup's first Christmas. :) Pitbulls can't NOT sit just anywhere. They have to sit touching someone. It's the funniest thing.

Their duck down is so funny. And they are incredibly soft too. Even the feathers!

Gary always crowing.

Gary and Black Betty...she snuck away from the flock to be with him. haha

I missed this thread! I avoided the computer for a successful 4 days. :D

It is great to have you back!

Happy Boxing Day!

thanks for this! and wondering if anyone else has any thoughts -- the two coops are probably roughly a half-acre apart, they can't SEE each other, but they can certainly hear each other. I can also get back into the habit of letting my girl free-range more in the afternoon, rather than the morning -- they are drawn toward my neighbor's property in the morning this time of year because he gets sun earlier than my place does -- but i don't want them constantly hanging around his coop?

and happy boxing day to all -- the day to recover from christmas!
Yes, they will competitive crow but I doubt it will be too bad with only two boys going at it. I would certainly recommend getting a roo if you are allowed. Roosters add an whole new level of enjoyment. I love watching the roosters interact and share with the hens. I have found that my Orps are quieter than all the other breeds that I raise. I guess their size makes up for them having to prove themselves.

I would be happy to give you a roo if you want to give it a try. I have Cream Legbars, Basque, SFH, Polish, Orps, Olive Eggers, Lakenvelder, Dominique and others I am sure I forgot to mention.

I am Chick sitting.
My friend who sells tons of eggs eating kind is going out of town for a week. so he brought his pen over and 62 baby chicks. I could not get them to all stand in the photo. My garage is packed as my grow up run is next to this one. nothing in it though.
what we have here are red and black sex links and a bunch of easter eggers

One of my Basque hens laid an egg today!

thank you for the kind offer! i will think seriously about taking you up on it -- technically i am *allowed* a roo, but i do worry about further enraging my uphill neighbor who was already angry (and still is, very pointedly) about the chicken coop.

and i'm not sure what kind of roo would go "best" with my much-varied flock? any suggestions? (i *would* prefer a quieter one, but i have no other Orps, so an Orp doesn't seem to make as much sense...)

probably over-thinking all of this!

Ccl= not quiet! My marans crow loud but not as frequently. Silkies are often quiet but I don't remember what you have. I have some extra quiet silkie boys and one incessant Crower if you want to drive your neighbor batty.

But the OE and Orlando the ccl are by far the loudest.
