California - Northern

I am terrible at following threads like this and I believe I have posted here before... :/ Is anyone near or in Oakland/Berkeley? I want to connect with other chicken people here and I KNOW they are here (in Oakland) but are they here (on BYC) too? I have a neighbor who has ducks, a friend with bantams in Berkeley, but I think I need more chicken friends. Plus, I'm looking for others to go in on a chick order in the spring. I lost 3 chickens in 2012 and I am down to only one layer plus two hens who haven't laid a single egg since I took them in. (Grrrr) So... hi!

Hi and welcome, I need some chicken buddies too lol. I'm out in the Central Valley though. Splitting an order of chicks sounds like fun :)

Hi HippiAiti! This thread does move fast. Miss a day and there are pages to catch up on! There is also a Bay Area thread for CA. It's not quite as active, but maybe some other Oakllandians will be on that thread as well. Depending on what type of chicks you want, I can suggest Western Farm Center in Santa Rosa. A bit of a drive, but you can pick what you like and there's no minimum. They have a great website and have already started posting the availability dates of some breeds for this spring. There might be a feed store closer to you. If you want special/rare breeds or heritage types, this thread is a great source. So many beautiful chickens, it's hard to choose!

Edited to add link.

Bay Area BYCers!

Wishing4Wings: I might check out Western Farm Center when I go up north to visit my mom in Healdsburg. I'll check out their website. Thanks! :)

I've looked at My Pet Chicken, but the shipping for 3-4 chicks was a bit pricey for me! I was looking at getting Easter-Eggers and either Barred Rocks or Cochins from them. I used to have giant cochins and I adored them! I also recently lost an Easter-Egger and I'd love to have more of them. If I can't find what I want locally, I wouldn't mind splitting shipping costs and then having a little chick home coming party/gathering.

EE's and BR are easy to find around here at feed stores. I just hatched out ( all gone now) the most AMAZING barred rocks from someone on the monthly egg swaps. They were the friendliest chicks i have ever had as young girls . They actualy jumped on the people buying then as soon as they came to the house and demanded treats. I should have hired them as sales chickens! I have to figure out who I got them from, I hatched 5 girls out of 6 eggs and they were all snuggle bunnies.

I have olive eggers ( ee mothers last generation) and marans and silkies usually. A few people have cream legbars another blue egg breed that is beautiful. They are also sweet chickens that have very soft feathers. We are lucky its a rare chicken and a few us of grabbed some next year and there should be chicks around this spring. Cochins you do not see as many around here for some reason.

Western Farm is awesome -- ask to speak to JP, he's the chicken expert -- their on-line schedule doesn't show having chicks til March, but they often have started birds for sale if you just drop by. other places to get chicks in the north bay include:
Mill Valley Chickens: http://www.millvalleychickens.com/chickens-for-sale.html
Napa Backyard Chickens: http://www.napabackyardchickens.com/available-large-fowl-chicks.html
and of course our very own Just Struttin' Farm -- breeder Deann is on this BYC list, and she can probably tell you when she might have chicks available again: http://www.juststruttinfarm.com/for-sale.html

So, I just joined BYC a while back, and just saw your post on the amazing barred rocks. I thought the story sounded all too familiar. We bought one of those BR pullets, and you are right! Super friendly - almost a "lap chicken" if such exists. She is doing well and she and our SLW get along great!

Welcome to BYC, and welcome to the thread!

I don't know if they process birds, but it's worth asking at Bud's Meats here in Penngrove (just north of Petaluma) -- i'm pretty sure they process other livestock like pigs and etc, as well as they MAY process things hunters bring in, so it seems like a good bet? i'll be interested to know what you find out, in case i end up with some extra chickens that need processing down the line?
