California - Northern

Well, I missed most of you at the show today. Couldn't find Maureen- wanted to buy her awesome honey. Some of you didn't recognize me, when I said hi. I was so glad to see Debi come up and say hello, but I was involved in a discussion with the only Dorking exhibitor I've ever seen at a show. Sorry, Debi, I truly wanted to chat!

Lots of awesome birds. Saw some turkeys that I wished that I could have taken home. My DH was so bored. I kept trying to get him interested. Finally- the Polish caught his eye. He took his time looking and trying to touch each one. I asked him why he liked them. He said that they reminded him of the Beatles in their early days.

Well, I just got back from the show and have had a chance to sit down an chat - after unloading and placing the 10 chickens I brought home.. and a find - for me... I found an old Sportsman cabinet incubator - just what I wanted - in my price range - and NO shipping because it did fit in the trunk of my car! It isn't pretty right now (really needs a nice paint job) but it works!

Since I know somebody is going to ask.. I came home with one Partridge Silky rooster (Owl), 2 young Copper Marans (splash/blue), 4 young Swedish Flower Hens (quad), 2 Silver Phoenix roosters (buy one, get one free - he was a mix of silver and gold with a floppy comb) and a free white showgirl who overstressed about the trip and is being kept in solitary confinement and a close eye on by me. She is at my feet in a cat carrier - sleeping right now.

I had LOADS of fun

- I am sorry. I got so sucked in by how many beautiful birds there were I forgot I was wearing a camera. Its a good thing that I didn't damage it by drooling all over it...

I wish I was going, would love to meet some of the BYC peeps! Maybe next time.
It's probably a good thing I have to stay home. I have NO will power!
Bummer to have missed you. Perhaps next year. I was a good girl and come home without any new chickens. I did get some awesome eggs from Jeff and Diane. Oh, wait, do I hear a song coming on?

Welcome Home! I now know why I've never gone to a poultry show (besides 4-H).........I would have NO well power! And, you got a "free" chicken even!!

That's awesome. We'd love to see pictures of your new chickens and incubator when you get a chance. And, once my partridge girl starts laying, maybe I could introduce her to Owl-LOL!

She looks like she's involved in an inter-racial relationship with my splash rooster (in my avatar), but he's never put a feather on her. I would be interested in doing AI with her and a handsome, SQ partridge silkie rooster.

I admire you (for not buying any new chickens). Did you not see anything you were interested in or was that your plan? Are those eggs for hatching or eating?

Hi everyone quick question when placing eggs in the incubator i see some people place their eggs sideways with an X and an O on either side and turn by hand, while otheres place point end down in egg carttons which is the better method ?
I have an auto turner and the eggs are placed big side up. For hatching, I take em off the turner and put them in cartons, again big end up. I do this to protect the eggs that have not hatched. I found that the hatched chicks play football with the un-hatched eggs. The pipped eggs that end up with their face to the screen often don't make it. The carton keeps the eggs in place so the un-hatched chicks can zip without being tossed about.

The carton seem to absorb some of the humidity so I sprits the eggs with warm water if I notice the humidity low.
