Looks Like you were correct! Another Bresse egg today....pullet egg, I went ahead and cracked it open....this time on Purpose...FERTILE!

Those of you who have done chicken exchanges in parking lots and the side of the road, do you do anything to make sure chickens don't escape during the transfer?

I'm meeting someone today, just off the freeway, to hand over 10 chickens. I don't have individual cages, will have to put multiples in large dog crates. These chickens are not used to being handled, some are very flighty. I'm hoping that I can do this without any escapees.

Any tips?

I delivered 4 pairs for someone else. I didn't know these birds at all and to avoid escapes I transfered them inside my van. Took enough crates out to be able to work inside to transfer birds then grabbed the next crate to swap. People sure look at you strange, fortunate that none of them looked like dinner, bantam sultans and nankins.

My Oldest DD has a bunch of moving boxes. I "borrow" them and put a couple of chickens in each box, more if they are smaller and then I just give them the box. They store flat and are easy to put together. She has small, medium and large boxes.

When I do not have a box, I make sure to grab the chicken by the feet. They do not get away when I do that!

I have had a couple of close calls but non have escaped yet!

Jeff is the master of trading off chickens on the freeway! I met him at the Willows Walmart to drop of ones I hatched for him and another person showed up to get some from him too! I dropped off 18 and he then sold some of those and some of his. He met more people that day too. He probably has a method for transferring them.

Gotta get the chicken fix!

When Farmer Fred picks up chickens from me, he always turns the container so that the opening is on the top rather than the front, if possible. They aren't as likely to escape from the top. He also opens it up only wide enough to get his hand in and then grabs them by their legs and brings them out that way. Either Kelly or I am there to close the door really fast. The ones who aren't used to being handled definitely put up a fuss.

You could also just transport them in small moving boxes like they sell at Lowes and just hand them over, still in the box. I have sent full sized birds home with buyers that way before. Just tape the top because they can force it open from flapping. Punch a few air holes and you are good to go. The boxes sold at Lowes actually have handle holes on the sides making them easier to carry and work for air. Good luck!

This may sound bad, but when I picked up my 2 hens, my crate was too big to fit in my car so I made an area in the back, but they were too flighty & I had to drive on the freeway for about 45 mins. the breeder said she had done this before- she put the hens in a paper bag & rolled it down just enough for them to relax. My daughter & I carried chickens in bags on the way home! They were fine & calm the whole time. I would bring some bags just in case!!
