I have my Polish eggs in there and occacianaly there's a pullet egg that is small from one of the other breeds but I balance them with some of the really big eggs. I try to pick larger egg layers for my eating eggs.

Molly said that the Jaerhorn eggs were a nice size and Henderson's chicken chart says that they are above average for size. I would guess that they lay eggs at least as big as my Australorps but not as big as my 76G Jumbo Marans eggs.

Is that a good guess Molly?

Good luck finding new homes for your roos. They are gorgeous! I have a question for folks who use online hatcheries.

I have an order from Murray McMurray due in mid May. I still have plenty of time to cancel it if I decide I ought to. I was looking through Meyer's site and I can get what I want from them too and for less $$.

My main worry is stress on the chicks. MM said they ship on Sat for Sun delivery at the postal distribution center, my local distribution center is in Petaluma, about 2 hours away and I would be willing to go there but from what I was told at the local PO that they aren't likely to even answer the door if I were to go there looking for my chicks. It looks like my option is to wait until they show up bright and early on Monday. I am worried that chicks who hatch on friday or I have even heard on thursday will be sitting and starving and dying of thirst all day Sun.

If I order through Meyer, they are coming from further away but they don't have the Sunday non delivery date to contend with.

Wondering what other rural Nor Cal people have done. Thanks!

Cancel and get them from Meyer. Weekend delivery is not a good thing even in May.

McMurray will hatch them and ship them Friday Afternoon and because it is the weekend they will sit too long. Even getting them from the Network Center(They have changed the name) is too long for them.

What are you ordering? I ordered EE chicks from Merer hatchery 3 years ago and they are the nicest EE I have ever had. Not at all skittish like some EE's can be. They also lay a beautiful blue egg.

Regarding McMurray, I'v ordered from them also and I picked up at the dist. center in Petaluma at 6am. I believe the dist. center is open 24 hours a day. They called me as soon as the chicks arrived and I jumped in the car. I am in Novato. I prefer picking up at the dist. center when possible. It usually saves the chicks a day of traveling.

Quote: Yes, it was most likely the lepto. I've bred Cocker Spaniels for over 30 years (this is our first Springer Spaniel). Actually, leptosis is commonly contracted in waterways or through contact with urine from wildlife. Mostly the wildlife that we chicken owners attract with our keeping of chickens, so anyone keeping chickens should vaccinate their dogs against it. In addition to keeping chickens and living out on a farm, we own a boat and do a lot of hiking in rivers and streams so our dogs are a candidate for the lepto vaccine. Lepto is traditionally given at 4 months.

Being a breeder, I've always been aware of the lepto vaccine issues but personally have never experienced a reaction. But knew exactly what was happening when she shook her head...well, at first I felt her neck to see if she had a knot at the point of injection, that may have been bothering her but I had massaged it really well and there was no knot. I then felt her jowl and it was already hardening and swelling...I had my husband take her and weigh her as I looked up the dosing on the benedryl, then ran to find the ONE pill I somehow recalled having. By the time I got back to her she looked like a Shar pei! The benedryl was one pill in the packaging but not in the box so it didn't have the dose on the little backing! I gave her 1/4 just to get some benedryl on board and we headed to the only 24 hour clinic, a 1/2 hour away (if you went the speed limit, we went 90 mph). I called them on the way to tell them I was bringing a 4 month old with anaphylaxis. by the time we got there she looked a lot better but we opted to have them give her a shot of benedryl and the steroid to help get it through her. She was still mildly swollen this morning but is looking much better today. Still dosing her with some benedryl orally.

I'm not a fan of yearly vaccines, I think that over-vaccination can cause over-stimulation of the immune system, and the destruction of the dog’s own blood cells by the white blood cells (I think we over-vaccinate our children too) so I won't boost her unless we go somewhere that a lot of domestic and wildlife animals potentially frequent. But you can be sure she'll get a course of benedryl prior and the lepto will be separate from the other vaccines and given a few days apart so that it's not such a jolt to her system and hope she's A OK!

Such a wealth of information here, thank you everyone for the support.

Hey all. A friend of mine has a couple of roosters that are pretty aggressive these days. She wants to get rid of them to whoever will take them. They are probably just under a year old, and if I am remembering correctly they are Buff Orpingtons. Been a few months since I have seen them. This is in Yreka, so if you have the freezer space and you can come and get them, they are yours. Just PM me, please.

Thanks, I couldn't find egg size info on the links I found on search and wondered if it was a small bird if the eggs were also. They sound ideal for a layer flock then.
