All of Betty's eggs so far are duds. No hatching. Just icky stinky eggs lol. She is still sitting on 4 from a friend. When I get my chicks Monday or so- I will slip a couple under her and remove the rest of the eggs. Hopefully the chicks don't die. :|

What's a typical age to be able to tell what sex a silkie/silkie mix is? I have 7 of them here and I know they are at least 6 weeks old but man they are still so small. lol The 3 LFs I have are the same age but they have been males for weeks already. lol

Silkies are terrible for sexing. They have to be several months old before you can even guess. Sometimes you can't tell until they crow/lay an egg. The silkie threads are full of "can you tell me what sex this bird is?".

I wish they would all be one day shows. Poultry shows are expensive because they always mean 1-2 nights in a hotel unless they are local to you. Everything else I've shown (rabbits, cavies, dogs), you go, show and you're done. You can leave the minute your animal is finished.

Yeah I think I will just patiently grow them out. They seem to be pretty easy to re-home if need be. They grow so slowly that I think after a couple weeks I can put the new LF chicks and them together (even though the silkies mixes will be like 2 months old then haha!). Thank you, Deb!

I agree on the one day shows. It is 3 1/2 hours drive time for me to get to Salem. That's the closest show I've found in OR, and it's taken years to get one back in Salem. It was a double show though. If I had shown it was stay over night or spend 7 hours on the road just to get the birds home.

It's about the same drive time to get to Redding and I could get home the same day. The Humboldt show is at least 4 1/2 hours. Since husband isn't into chickens and has enough projects around here it makes it tough to getaway since I need take special needs greyhound also.

I hatched 5, one was a BOY from day one, I ended up with 3 girls and two boys and was only wrong about sexing one of them at two months. Sometimes you can just tell. It's fun to guess. Why don't you post some updated pics?

you guys are getting such fabulous breeds! i found raising baby chicks to be a huge headache, given my schedule & etc, but will hope that some of you end up with some extras once they're juveniles that you'll want to find homes for...

I do too. Even though chicks are adorable, I would be interested in buying an extra pullet or two

I have on IG periodically. Is there something specifically I should be focusing on that will help determine silkie mix gender? They don't seem to act like the LF chickens do...

Yay! I finally set my first eggs of the year in the incubator. I have been getting jealous of all of you who have been hatching cute fluffy butts

I set 50 eggs. 19 Barnevelders, 17 blue Barnevelders, and 14 F1 silver Barnevelder project eggs ( the silvers are for my neighbor).
