Debi that is excellent news. I went thru that in 2007. It ended up being a lumpectomy and radiation. Because of my mom having breast cancer twice I asked to have a double mastectomy, but they wouldn't do it. They did the 2 DNA tests and determined that we didn't have the braca genes either. That is another big plus for you and your sisters

Thank you, Jules! Her doctor is all for the double mastectomy even though the tumor is a stage 0 and there is no family history of breast cancer. I'm so glad that you beat it! I just got an email from Kohl's and they have a line of Jennifer Lopez items that all the proceeds go to the fight against breast cancer. Monet and I are going to go look at them. We may be sporting pink bags on our trip to Denver.

My daughter just came screaming up from the coop. One of the chicks that we got from PapaBrooder yesterday died. She was under mama's foot. My dear daughter is very sad, since that was the Americauna that she was holding yesterday while we picked chicks. I am not sure if this one started eating/drinking when we brought it home. I think this is the same one that was sprawled out under mama (you know how chicks can sometimes sleep) when I checked on them this morning. I reached in, and it woke right up, but now she is gone.

It's still hard when you're 99. So sorry she had to find the little one, especially if it was going to be her special. I had to tell my daughter her first D'anver died on her 13th birthday. He was 3 months old and got crushed 1 night with 7 others in the brood.

Always a good day when you have new chicks! 4/4 EEs (3 surprise chocolate, 1 buff colored) 4/4 LF BLRWs (2 splash, 2 blue) and 5/6 bantam BLRWs (4 splash, 1 blue) hatched.

Congrats Chickee what a great hatch. I can't wait to see the chocolates grown up and the Blue Laced babies too. Chickee is incubating large fowl SL's from Peaky Beaky for me no., Eggs arrived in pristine condition so we're excited about them too. Excitement will have to wait til hatch day. Congrats on the babies Zoowee and good luck with the patient. She does look lots better. Cheers from a dedicated lurker just checking in.

see if fed stores will order them for you. I have seen them at some stores, so they carry em at distributors. Just a question if they can get them individually. 


I have been  depresssed all weekend. My  cream legbar hen Liv died while I was on site at the last emergency staging job.  Mario couldnt bring himself to tell me untill I got home. We had not gotten any eggs from her in a few days and I think she was egg bound.  Everyone else is fine and spritely, So I think I am going to bury her under her favorite orange tree rather then send her to Davis.  I have been sitting in a chair blubbering on and off since Sunday.

If anyone has a spare Cream legbar hen ( oh well one can dream) let me know, I miss her. Her sister cate is stil looking for her,  She stopped calling this morning but she still seems blue too.

Hello All Northern California Chicken Buddies!

I posted a few years back and lurk around BYC a LOT!

I have a question for you local ladies and gentlemen and I am hoping you can offer advice or information. (I apologize if it was discussed in the past. I haven't gotten through all 1488 pages on this thread)

I had chickens a couple of years ago and had to move. So I gave my girls to a friend that has a farm. Now I am getting more of my own chickens in May. This time I also wanted to try to hatch a few......

My concern is that I really am not supposed to have roosters although I hear a few in the neighborhood. If I hatch them myself, theoretically I will get 50% roosters. Even if I could have them, I probably wouldn't do well with half of them being roosters.

I have not worked myself up to the point of being able to eat the birds I know personally, so me processing them isn't an option for now. If I was starving I am certain it would be different, but trust me, I am not starving.

What do all of you do with your Roosters that you need to find a home for, OR is there a Northern California processor or individual that would do the processing for a fee? Or anyone that would just take the extra Roosters?

I see the posts on Craig's list offering Roosters, and I am not sure how well that works since I haven't had to do it.

Any thoughts, opinions, resources, etc are appreciated!

There is an auction two times a month at Denios. You drop them off, fill out a form and you might even get a check later. In April a Small animal exchange in Orange Vale will start up again. It meets once a month on a Saturday and there is a guy that takes Roos there. If not, a local person takes them for her Rooster Rescue.

You can also sell them on CL.

Another dedicated lurker saying hi. What a beautiful day today. Love all the pics of babies hatching and sad to hear about the losses. Best wishes for future hatches and also prayers for family members dealing with cancer.

I also have a chicken health question. My small flock of almost 1 yr old chickens have had very watery stools for a few weeks now. They are eating and active, laying a bit sporadically, and have no other symptoms except one with a poopy butt. Do you think this is worms? I have injectable Ivomec for cattle/swine and wondered if this the best to use or should I get something else? Also, during the withdrawl time, do you toss your eggs, or can you feed them back to the hens or maybe to the dogs?

I have done several things with the cockerels that I have ended up with. I've given the purebreds away to friends, sold some on craigslist, given them to a rooster rescue, processed them with a friend for eating, and, most recently, taken them to a friend's farm where we are going to start a breeding program. This same friend and I are trying different breeds to see which dual purpose breed will be the best for us. We are willing to take any extra cockerels anyone has as long as you understand that they will probably be used for meat. They will have a good life being fed and free ranging on a 10 acre farm until processing day.
