She is SO CUTE!
Checked on my momma with 1 of her own hatched chicks and 3 that I added last night. They are all doing well! SO happy to have momma doing the work.

She is SO CUTE!
I have seen them in one of my catalogs but I do not remember which one.Well, after much contemplation, I have decided to send my favorite little roo to my home state (OK) to live on a farm with my Uncle Rob (he raises chickens too and just lost his guy to a coyote).
Question is: where can I get one of those boxes to send him other than ordering online? Do they sell them anywhere? Does anyone have one I can buy? He is two months old and is about the size of my full grown pullets.
Thanks,
~ Haileigh
Yes, he said the "free" box cost more to have it shipped then If he had purchased a box online and had it shipped to Arkansas.Didn't Jason post a box dilema when trying to get Whitey shipped out here?
Debie,Thank you, Kim. She is having surgery on Valentine's Day. I guess no one else wanted surgery on that day so they were able to get her in earlier than would normally have been possible. She has opted for major surgery rather than just a lumpectomy so the reconstruction process will take a year. It was a tough decision for her. I can't imagine having to make that kind of decision. I admire her so much!
My experiance is they bop around for a week or so then get as dark as they will get and it goes downhill from there, faster on some hens then others. Once they stop for winter or moult they will get darker again. As the eggs get bigger they get lighter too. Thats a good solid color but not in the higher ranges of color for Marans eggs. Your goal in "good" eggs is too not have any of what I call brick color, the orangie color. But blues wont produce the darkest eggs. I bet they are darker then your picture! I cant get any of my egg color to be true in a photo. On further exploration, I found two more! There is a bit of a difference in color so I think they're both laying! One is slightly darker but I'm happy with both. Honestly, from those who know..., what's your thoughts on color quality and or what can I expect? Hard to get a picture to show how dark they .....![]()
Mare SURE the spot is 95( or at least 90) . Too close and it will got to 100 and fry the ones that cant get away. A 100 watt bulb if too far fro the top of the brooder wont keep 95 in cold weather. I had a few customers not check and loose chicks when it gets cold at night so far already this year, the temps are swinging like crazy around here.I was going to say it looks better than the first pictures! I'm so glad she seems to be recovering.
We had the light on in our potential brooder tonight to see if it would be about the right temperature and we found this:
Our cat Wash enjoying the heat lamp. Don't worry, it will have a good strong lid before the babies arrive (9 or 10 days!!)
I do have a question, we're getting 25 chicks (hopefully they all make it) and the brooder is a wooden box we'll have inside. The box 2 feet wide and 7 feet long. We were thinking of sectioning off some of it at first. Would you do that? How much of it? And should we use one lamp or two? We have 100 watt bulbs. Thanks!
Check and see if feed stores will order them for you. I have seen them at some stores, so they carry em at distributors. Just a question if they can get them individually.Well, after much contemplation, I have decided to send my favorite little roo to my home state (OK) to live on a farm with my Uncle Rob (he raises chickens too and just lost his guy to a coyote).

Quote: I am sorry to hear about Liv!
I hope you find another one soon. The Sherriff just got some new ones from Green Fire. Maybe Deanne has some?![]()
So sorry to hear about the loss of your hen!I have been depresssed all weekend. My cream legbar hen Liv died while I was on site at the last emergency staging job. Mario couldnt bring himself to tell me untill I got home. We had not gotten any eggs from her in a few days and I think she was egg bound. Everyone else is fine and spritely, So I think I am going to bury her under her favorite orange tree rather then send her to Davis. I have been sitting in a chair blubbering on and off since Sunday.
If anyone has a spare Cream legbar hen ( oh well one can dream) let me know, I miss her. Her sister cate is stil looking for her, She stopped calling this morning but she still seems blue too.
Debi that is excellent news. I went thru that in 2007. It ended up being a lumpectomy and radiation. Because of my mom having breast cancer twice I asked to have a double mastectomy, but they wouldn't do it. They did the 2 DNA tests and determined that we didn't have the braca genes either. That is another big plus for you and your sistersSo sorry to hear about the loss of your hen!It always seems to be my favorites that have something weird happen to them. Thank you for sharing about your grandma. The prognosis for my sister is good. Her doctor downgraded her tumor to stage 0 and is fairly sure that her lymph nodes are not involved. We will all be relieved when the surgery is over and the pathology report is in so we know for sure.![]()
