California - Northern

I've been busy the past 2 days and haven't kept up with the thread. I hope everyone's chickens are well!

I need some advice, I saw one of my chickens eating a dead bird today. I know this was the same sick bird that I saw on my feeder earlier, its feathers were all fluffed up and it was clearly not doing well. My cat killed it and then one of the chickens thought it would make a good snack. I managed to keep the chicken from eating it but she still got exposed to whatever that bird had. Any suggestions on pre-emptive steps I should take here? I'm not sure what diseases wild birds can commonly transfer to chickens.

Molly might have most of those too!

Jason has two types of nice dark egg layers--Crele Penedesenca and White empordanesa.

I don't know about Wyandottes, but Debs_Flock probably has the others or all of them too.

Noob question, what's a Penedesenca?

They are very dark egg laying chickens from Spain. Go here: http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html#p

And look them up. There are links to more information including pictures if you click on the links below the name. They are Ultra Heat Hardy.

But also interested in Ameraucanas, Easter Eggers, Wyandotte's, and Marans. We will be looking into buying and picking up some chicks or pullets around the 20th of this month.

So excited!

I've got BC Marans in the incubator now. I just sold the last batch last weekend. The first guy out took them all. My egg color has been pretty good and my breeding group have done fairly well at the shows.

I don't have the other breeds you're looking for, but do have "reject" Araucana that will work as EE's. Reject only because of being clean faced and sometimes a tail. The last two I hatched out (one yesterday) is going to be a blue. They do lay a lovely blue egg. I'm in El Dorado Co.

Do you have West Nile virus in your area? That would be my biggest concern.

Could put those in a kids easter basket and see how many are mistakenly bitten into as chocolates
