Welcome I am in Placerville myself. well south east a ways but still in the zip code.Hey everyone! Just dropping in to say Hi!
I'm from the Placerville area.
fishing type netting is good to keep hawks out as well.Happy Monday everyone!
It sounds like the chickens are on the mend for those with sick ones!
Capayvalley chick! Thanks Kim for posting that article on Coci. The Manure test UCD performed on the sample I sent in tested for coci. There was a small amount in the chicken yard and luckily it has been dry lately. I am keeping a close eye on them now.
This morning I was doing the chicken chores in the dark and my Bresse pullet was not in the pen! I searched the other pens and the plum tree to see where she was. I did not find a pile of feathers so I kept looking. There are not that many places to hide at my place in the City.... I found her in the corner behind the shed. She was fine but would not let me pick her up. Not being one to do the chicken chase, I went to the Garage and grabbed my fishing net. That made the job much easier.
I think she was small enough to get out using the egg collecting hole. I am going to have to double bolt that thing.
Can I be considered a good folk from the Oe threadThe good folks on the OE(Olive Egg) thread said my Pene X Cream Legbar chicks are all pullets:
ronott1, my CCLxCP OE pullets look almost identical to yours, body shape and coloring, except yours have more variation in the color of the neck feathers and crest. Count yourself lucky that you got all pullets! From the abundance of males I've seen, they are definitely auto-sexing.
I am sure the Cosmos will now balance it all out by making my Bresse hatch be all Cockerels...Oh wait a minute! That would beOK!

or Pena da sinkahyou are not alone. I am hoping hoping hoping that inside the hatching eggs I am setting next month that there will be part. chanteclers to go along with my part. rock babies from Privett.
How do you pronounce "Penedesenca?"
yes what Ron and Deb saidThe Spanish name is: Barrada (Crele), Jason said Creel so I will go with that.
They are very rare chickens. I did find this:
The Penedesenca is a breed of chicken originating in the Spanish province of Catalonia, in the area around Vilafranca del Penedès, which is the main town in the region known as "Penedès". It was developed in the first half of the 20th century from native barnyard chickens, and today is noted for producing copious amounts of very dark brown eggs, said to be among the darkest of any breed of chicken.
The earliest variety was the Black Penedesenca, which became standardized in 1946, when it was better known as the Vilafranca chicken. Today, Black, Crele, Partridge, and Wheaten colors exist (the Crele variety shows sexual differentiation at hatching, the males being light ash-grey and the females nut-brown in color). However, no variety has been accepted in to poultry standards. All members of the breed possess red earlobes with a white center, red wattles, and an unusual red comb. Called the king's comb or carnation comb, it is similar to a common single comb but has several lobes at the rear. The breed is rare among poultry fanciers in North America, but is a common breed in Central and South America.
The Crele are Barred but it is a single Gene that shows up in the Roos. The pullets do not have the barring. Barring and the way it colors the chicken is why they are auto sexing at hatch.
They do very well in the heat.
