So I have a weird question, and I need advice. Since I can't have roosters, and want free/cheap hatching eggs, would a loner rooster work? Are chickens shy about "one night stands", or if I borrowed a rooster for a couple days, would he be able to get the job done? If I had a rooster for, say... 2 days, how long would the eggs be fertile?

You can also put them on the roost with her. Sounds like she is trying to teach them to roost. She thinks they are ready. But hens are not terribly bright.

Ester my last broody used to jump up on a chair and sit Down to warm her chicks.....who were running around on the floor peeping. She does not have the best track record.

Welcome new people! I have been catching up on my phone so I can't quote from the last day, but it is good to see you all here.

Threadgeek, if you ending up wanting marans eggs or chicks later my eggs will be pure this week. I'll be putting them in and will have chicks next month' so yell if you care. I love marans they are both beautiful and fun.

Exciting news on the bresse ( otherwise known as the goonie birds) ! They have started mating, so I am expecting eggs soonish! I am going to clean out the bottom coop for laying boxes as soon as it dries out.

Mario brought a huge wooden box from engine parts I am going to use as a brooder. I think I'm going to try the sand litter box method. Now I just need to fin a big scoop that will pick up tiny poo.

We are covered in mist this morning. It is the first time this ear. Last year we were misty almost every morning I missed it.
YES I would LOVE maran eggs!

My incubator will be occupied till the end of the month, would I be able to get them after 3/25? I checked your profile and your birds are so pretty! I noticed too that you have cream legbars...

Btw, as a kid I used to have lots of Breyer horses too... but I played with them all the time and would always end up breaking legs off. So basically I had a bunch of 3 and 2 legged horses!

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has experience building incubators. I finished my cabinet but it seems to be having a difficult time regulating temperature. I have the probe inside of a folded heat/cold pack, the air where the eggs will be sitting ranges from 95 to 100 but the heat/cold pack stays at right around 99.5. I'm using http://incubatorwarehouse.com/225-watt-cabinet-incukit.html to heat it and the sizing for the cabinet is fine. Am I freaking out to much as it's the air temp and wouldn't be the egg temp? I have 28 eggs sitting nearby waiting for it and if I can't figure it out I'm tempted to just go and get a hovabator so they don't go to waste. Any help would be appreciated.

A hen is fertile for 2 to 3 weeks after mating. You have to wait for 3 to 5 eggs before they will be fertile. The Rooster only needs to be there rarely. One person said that absence makes the heart grow fonder, so the roo only needs to be there a couple of hours.

It would be best to raise the roo with the hens, otherwise they will need time to get used to each other. I am hoping to hide a couple of roos in the country and let them make visits on the weekend. I hope it all works out well....

Another option is Artificial insemination.

Since Hens laying is often disrupted by moving it is not recommended to take the pullets to the Roo.

I hope this all works out!

I'm zoned agricultural - so I can have up to 100 chickens on my property. My DH would have a coronary if I had that many, but I'm able to have them. Besides, with a couple of neighbors with dogs that bark CONSTANTLY (meaning all day long non stop - and no I'm not kidding), they'd better not complain about my roosters. Newsflash people, when your dog barks so much that it is hoarse, it's a problem.

And I'm on 5 acres, so it's not like they are close.
Omg that would drive me nuts! I hope you have a lot of roosters to fight back lol
