California - Northern

Are you actually in Sacramento, or Rio Linda? I might deliver your mail.

Ooops, I guess I need to update my location. We used to live in 95842 -Sacramento address, but really Foothill Farms. Now, we actually live in Rio Linda as of March 1st. I found the cute, Rio Linda post office this week. Do you work from the Rio Linda PO? I'd be curious to know how they handle shipped eggs-hehe!

It's the perfect area for us because my husbands commute to work is 5 minutes and we're still close to everything. It is zoned AG and I can have all the chickens and roosters I want.

The neighbors all have horses, miniature-horses, chickens and/or goats. I feel like I'm living in a dream.

Here is a pic of some shipped eggs I got today, couldn't believe it! Opened the TINY box to this Then this is all They were wrapped in, little squares of bubble wrap and just put in cartons!?

Your best bet is to go. The hardest skill to learn about hatching is how to sit on your hands. Way more chicks are killed by helping too soon than by letting them take their time.

No actual statistics on that, just my opinion....
Thanks for the advice. I made arrangements to go so there's no backing out now! DH will be home in case something happens.

Quote: Redriver thank you for confirming!

Quote: I cannot stand a constant barking dog! Our neighbors had one that barked all night and even though it was 10 acres away it sounded like that dog was sitting under my window!!! I finally went to thier house at 2am and there's the dog sitting on the front porch! I banged on thier door and yelled in the window to shut their darn dog up!! Wgen they would t come to the door, I left a note that their dog barked all night! Signed their sleepless neighbor!
BigDaddy'sMom I'm wondering if the dog continued to bark after you left that note!

Nope! And they never responded or referred to my middle of the night visit when we saw them.
I'm sorry in advance for the quantity of pics. I went on a shooting spree with my Appleyards.
Beautiful pictures!

Quote: We recently moved to an AG zoned area and I love it!!! I'm so happy to not need to answer to silly HoA rules!

I had another experience exposing DH to chicken math last night. I was telling him about how many chicks were going to hatch and he asked how long we needed to keep them until I got rid of the roosters and extra hens. When he realized we were going to have these chickens for a few months I was quietly holding my breath but his first response was something like "well, sounds like we need to make enlarging that chicken run a top priority". And that is why I married him!

He is also getting me a temperature/hygrometer datalogging probe so we can plot the temp/humidity of the incubator over time (he's an engineer and I'm a scientist). It should be running before the eggs go into lockdown!

Candle them and look for cracks. Also check the air cells to see how round they are and if you can even see them. If they look ok, Incubate with the turner off for a day. If they look bad, leave the turner off for 3 days. They need to incubate standing big end up.

Also, sniff each egg regularly!
