Okay, here's the new toy..........

First the 80# box arrived. You can see the old setup, along with the brooder where the chicks spend their first week so I can watch them.

Got it set up!

A peek at the top shelf, you can't see it actually holds 7 rows of eggs.

I've already got all three shelves filled, with a half tray of overflow in the bottom that need hand turning.................(but one whole shelf locks down this next week).

Nice!!! This is the stuff my dreams are made of!

It does sound like Cocidiosis. Treat with Corid and make sure they all drink it. Dip their beaks into it if they you do not see them drinking.

Use 20% soluble powder
Mix 1/4 tsp per quart. Once mixed, it is good for 2 days
Give it to them as the only source of water for 5 days
Give them another course at half strength for another 5 days

Some breeds are more susceptible to Coci than others. Luckily they recover quickly. Yes, treat them all. The medicated feed does not cure it. It is supposed to allow them to build resistance.

I went to the feed store today to buy some Corid to add to my chicken first aid container. They had liquid Corid (9.5% amprolium I think) in the cattle section and AmproMed powder for Poutry (20% amprolium) in the poultry section. I went ahead and bought the powder thinking that the self life might be longer. The directions are for much larger quantities of solution than I need. I'll have to figure out how much to mix per qt of water. Has anyone used AmproMed instead of Corid?

Hmm, one of our Buff Orpingtons (almost five weeks old) seems to be going downhill fast. They all seemed fine yesterday and this morning when I took them outside she looked pale compared to her sisters. Then I noticed her off by herself kind of puffed up. I held her and she was very docile. Too docile, you know what I mean? I went out later and same thing. I brought her inside to make her and egg and asked my daughter to hold her - Clementine made a "nest" out of a play pot for her and the chicken is just sitting quietly in the middle of the living room in it, not peeping, not getting up. Clearly not a good sign. I'm worried about her, obviously, but I'm also worried about the rest of the chickens getting whatever is ailing her. What should I be looking for/doing? We didn't get them vaccinated. They were on medicated feed (just went through one bag and then switched to unmedicated. They get scrambled eggs a few times a week and go outside almost every day. They always have chick grit in their food. The people who lived here before us had chickens, but that was over a year ago. Our chickens can go where those chickens were. They had turf in their brooder starting when they were little. Help!

So sorry that you are going through this! The 13 chicks in my brooder went through this last week. One was too far gone and died before I realized what was happening. The chicks were all fine with no bloody poos when I went to bed and when I got up, the brooder was dotted with bloody poos with one obviously sick chick. I treated them with Sulmet because that is what I had. All have recovered and are doing fine now. I hope that your chicks all recover, too!

The chicks were all fine with no bloody poos when I went to bed and when I got up, the brooder was dotted with bloody poos with one obviously sick chick. I treated them with Sulmet because that is what I had. All have recovered and are doing fine now. I hope that your chicks all recover, too!

That's great to hear! I went to our closest feed store and called TSC and neither had Corid. Went to a different one in Petaluma (which I did not care for) that did have Corid. It is the powered kind (20% amprolium) and is branded for "bovine coccidiosis". I'm going to mix it up now and put it in their water. No bloody poos so far. Question about coccidiosis, should I separate the one that is lethargic? What kind of after care is there, is it a bleach-everything, scorched-earth kind of thing? I'll do some research, but any info you all want to share would be much appreciated.

My obviously sick one died while I was mixing up the Sulmet. But she wasn't the only one with bloody poos. Since I couldn't tell which ones were sick and they were all together, I treated all of them. I hate using medicine unless I absolutely have to but in this case I decided that it was necessary. I did clean out the brooder and sprayed it with an oxine solution to hopefully kill any buggies left behind. I have been more vigilant on cleaning the brooder since this happened. This was my first experience with coccidiosis so more experienced people should have more advice for you.

My silkies are driving me crazy!! Are they ever not broody??? I have one that I gave some chicks too, and now the other one is broody too ( again). I think she laid 3 eggs before going broody again. There is no stopping them. The main issue is they scare all the other girls out of the nesting boxes. I've been finding random eggs everywhere. Under the coop, on a garden shelf, in a bag of pine shavings, even in a garbage can.

Hi Norcal friends Been crazy around here... A silkie chick with wry neck passed, my EE is better from her URI, but not laying yet. I got some Coturnix quail that are slowly laying & I'm just managing the different ages & cages I found an egg my leghorn laid today streaked with blood. Should I be concerned?? Also I'm looking for more quail to buy, but can't seem to find any locally. Anybody know of anybody with quail for sale?

I have had one doing the blood on the egg and it is Vent Gleet! I Am treating currently.
