I had an added benny of having had a broody. We had 7 chicks running around with the broody. When my other 16 or so chicks were 4 weeks old I kicked them out to the coop. I locked them in the run during the day with the 12 week old silkie chicks. For 2 weeks. Then Monday I opened the door to the run and alllllll the chicks came flyin outside. My current grown up flock (16 adult chickens) totally accepted them. Blew my mind. I know it helped that there were already 7 chicks running around outside. I'm so thrilled with how integrated my flock is with what feels like so little effort. The it's so adorable to see 25+ 6 week old and 14 week old chicks free ranging. They seem to know to stick close to trees and bushes for the most part. Chickens are pretty smart.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I won't move them until they're older then but I still want to keep them close so they can at least get used to each other. Thing is is that they already have a flock block in with them, I may try the cabbage thing. After I posted this I noticed another girl, the actual lead hen, was also making a rucus. So it looks like Zsa Zsa, our lowest ranking hen, was trying to start a coup. How long should I expect such noise to continue? And this is the point where I wish I had more chickens laying so I could pass out some eggs to neighbors as an "I'm sorry for all the commotion" present.

Yes Go Chickies! We are having a hatch a long!

2 SG Dorkings hatched this morning with 4 pipped Dorking eggs and 1 pipped Delaware! Get the brooder ready Kim!
Yeah!!!! I have 4 out now and none of them are the 2 first pippers. I can see the Icelandic is still moving but I haven't seen any movement with the Orpington chick since the middle of the night. Hopefully, it is just resting up for the final push.

The kids really enjoyed having chicks hatch in their class rooms:) All but four eggs hatched so 36 hicks hatched despite being taken to school during lock down and being in unheated classrooms overnight. The genesis bator managed to keep temps pretty well:) I did have a problem with humidity. It dropped overnight down to below 40% and since the bator was at school... I couldn't check it until the next day . I had to help a stuck chick who had zipped, but couldn't get out of the shell. the chick is doing just fine now:)

I brought the bator home yesterday and the last few chicks hatched out this morning:)

Happy Easter Hatching Everyone!

Yes

my coop is open and we get all this.
yuck x2
Love the snowy chick pics!

It is good to know that you have a three sided coop where you are!! We don't get as cold as Placerville here in Lake County and I think we get hotter. It means I can keep my my already three sided coop as is when I retrofit it. Thinking if I put a big cardboard box in it to block the breeze and shore it up with hardware cloth it will be fine for my babies too.

2 chicks out this morning and they aren't the 2 that pipped first yesterday! I got up several times during the night to check on them. The first 2 pips had zipped about 2/3-3/4 around by 2 AM but they haven't made any progress since then. Almost all of the eggs had pips at that point. Then when I got up at 6 this morning, 2 other ones had zipped, hatched, and were drying off! All of the eggs have pips and some are working on zipping! I sure hope the first 2 make it out! Go, chickies, go!!!

What is your humidity at now that the hatching has started? Have you noticed any change?

With the quail they must have been so small and their was very little goo of any kind although they were wet they didn't affect the humidity.

Congratulations! It always seem that you're eying the first pips and another chicks pips, zips and hatches that you didn't even notice! Sounds like a great hatch!

Happy Easter to you too Trisha! There is something special having chicks right at Easter!

Look what arrived yesterday from SunnyDawn! I wish the picture showed just how dark they are....they are amazing! Gotta clean the incubator and get these going. Sunny and I are working on a dark egg project. They arrived all safe and sound and beautifully packed!
