All this talk of the magic of Oxine makes me thing of my other favorite thing: Coconut oil! Are there any uses for coconut oil with chickens? I know it has antibacterial properties and it's good for you to have a tablespoon when you're sick or something. I use it in homemade deodorant, face cream, lotion and on my hair sometimes. I also use it straight on really dry skin or rashes.

Chiquta, I need to order some Oxine... we may be able to combine shipping and save money if you want.
I use coconut oil all the time not only for eating but also for topical applications! I use it as cooking oil and in baking. I have mixed it in with yogurt for my birds and put it in my dog's food when I remember. I buy large amounts of organic unsweetened coconut flakes and my birds love it when I throw them a handful! We use it for baking and in granola. Tropical Traditions sells chickens for meat that have been fed a feed called Cocofeed that is made from coconut pulp. It sounds like it is good stuff! I contacted them to see if I could buy the feed but they answered that I would have to buy it in bulk and that made it too pricey to consider.

I have found some articles on putting together Chicken first aid kits, but they have so much in them... I see a few things routinely mentioned on here and was thinking if I'm going to order Oxine, maybe I could order some of them too. Would someone mind making a list of the few most vital things to have on hand? Especially things you might need immediately (like to put on bad wounds) or the feed store might not have.

Thanks!

ETA I'm anticipating worming the chickens soon (how old do they have to be?). What's the favorite wormer?
I really do not have a huge first aid kit. There are things I use all the time:

Big Ole Bird(prevention)
Liquid Baby vitamins without iron(added at the last hatch)
corid
Vetricyn Gel
Food Grade DE
Ivermetin(Testing now)
Electrolyte vitamins
Probiotic

I should probably get some type of anti biotic to have on had but I have never had a sniffle. Of course "No one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition" to quote Monty Python.

Ron, do you use Ivermectin pour on or injectable? I tried the injectable (because I had some) and I'm not sure it worked. 2nd round with Valbazen did the trick, but it still took over a week before symptoms abated.

Deerling, the Valbazen is for livestock, not labeled for chickens, but contains Albendazole, which seems to be the only wormer that works on all the types of worms that chickens can get. Good stuff, but not cheap. I can't imagine using the entire pint bottle in the next 10 years, so will share some with you if you are interested. I'm close by.

No! NO CITRIC ACID! It is bad for the birds! I don't remember exactly why but just get the oxine!

We are ordering it today, don't know if I will get it by Thursday, but ant me to order you a bottle for next time I'm down? I'm guessing not next week but the week after.

AS for chicken first aid, I'd add if you have anyone fluffy sissors with blunt ends that can be sharpened, like for eyelashes. I use then a lot, I use rooster booster w/o iron instead of save a chick ( can get larger containers) and I got a pain reliever from Tractor Supply ( have not used it yet)

Blu kote is a MUST, and I have noesporin with NO pain medication I use a lot too. I got tylan and keep it and sulmet in the fridge. I hatch a lot so I keep stuff for flatening out feet ( I tape furniture pads to the feet, the glue sticks the toes out, and the tape keeps them on. , and the right sized cups for dealing with splay leg. I'm hoping now that I'm not using thermometers that are wrong, i will have less feet issues! ( this was quail) last year I got good at fixing feet stuff. oh! and I have nustock, its a pine based thing that is supposed to work wonders. I use it on wounds on occasion, and to kill lice eggs, very sticky but good.

I personally only like very fresh coconut, and do not like the oil smell so I avoid it. My Mother uses it for everything.

You may live in an area where ivermectin has resistance. It seems to work at my place. UCD tested and found no worms after I treated them.

I do have pour on but will only use it if they have mites or lice. It is a heart worm preventative in Dogs and kills fleas in cats though.....

I have read that ivermectin is good to use first because it kills the worms slowly and is less likely to cause the chickens to be killed by, well too many dead worms too fast. Then Valbazen for the follow up treatment.

Sure, that would be great! Or if you'd like I could order it, the cost may work out with the chicks (not sure exactly :) )
