Chickens are great therapy. NPR yesterday had a report on a study--It turns out people heal from surgery better if they can see nature.

Sheery has the best silkies in the country, IMO. I love your smooth sizzle and frilkie. Frilkies are the most fun of all feather sets, I think. You have some pretty babies!!
I still get startled when I see NN. And my non silked showgirls look almost the same, but somehow the black skin makes it seem less... naked!
yes! Mine don't like being washed but the blow drying they love. I need a better blow dryer. I inherited mine from my mother in 1979.....
They never LOVE being held, but the more friendly ones will sit with you and demand treats. I finally had my first major hatch of quail, now to get started calling people. ( deb are ALL those quail decendent from my eggs? wowzors)
How are the babies?
ok, too awesome to live. I think its pronounced CO-turnix. But I have heard COT turnix too. M ario never counts chicks, but once the juvies get out of control he looks at me so sadly....

Thanks, Chiqita!!! Frilkie??? I thought she was a sizzle? I have no idea! lol. I'm about to start breeding Coturnix.... any hoops to jump through? How do you sell the eggs? Just on craigslist?

I totally agree, Ron! I am a nurse with bad anxiety... when I work out in the yard with the birds, I'm caring for patients that don't swear at me & I'm taking care of nature & giving back to the house & birds. I love the cycle of no waste!! It's really hard to fill back up spiritually & emotionally after taking care of humans for so many years.

@PetRock: I know the TSC in our area had hardware cloth cheaper than Lowe's or Home Depot. We've been pricing it also cause we intend to use it with out pens. I hope this was helpful and not too late.

@everyone else: Gorgeous chickens, I've enjoyed looking at them all so much.

I feel like quality of life for patients would be improved so much at rest homes if the residents could care for and hold chickens. It just makes sense.

ETA after reading SilkieRose' post I would say that the hens would be good for the nurses/caregivers as well.

Chicken therapy would be awesome in hospitals too. If we could figure out how to keep contaminants out of the picture.

Quote: I lock them down on day 14. My quail eggs are in one of my Genesis 1588. They make rails specifically for quail eggs, filled the incubator holds 120 (unless you broke one of the rails like I did

).

You couldn't house them together, quail can get ornery. But I keep both kinds separately.

Good luck with your hatch.

Me: Honey let's get a few chicks from the feedstore for fresh eggs.
H : Sure, I'll build a coop
8 weeks later
Me: I NEED show chickens (son showed poultry in 4H 20 years ago), I forgot how much I enjoyed having them.
H: Sure, I'll build a coop

Two years later, thirty-five coops, 300+ chickens, countless chicks, four incubators with a combined capacity of around 500 eggs..................

Heed the warnings!!!!!

Just added another breed (or two) last night. And we're not counting the ducks, geese, quail, turkeys, sheep, alpaca, llamas, dogs........................I need a government subsidy for the feedstore.

Hmmmmm, now to find a housesitter so we can take a vacation, LOL
Man I'd sure like to see your place, I can't imagine lol.

A frilkie is a sizzle that has silked genes rather then smooth genes. A sizzle has hooked feather genes so it does not have silked feathers. Very few people work with them but I love them.

It's quite pleasant in the spring/fall...................not so much in the winter when we're dealing with mud

, despite trying to roof the runs as much as possible..................and we do have a few flies in the summer...............

But we still enjoy chicken TV as long as it's not raining.

This was the "Honey, I'd like a few chickens from the feedstore".

This is some of the expansion.

Just this morning "Honey" was doodling where he wants to put the next house.
