California - Northern

Those Turkens/Naked Necks are really cool. They are pretty chill but love to roost and be up high if they can. Day 1 they laid 3 eggs, next day 2 eggs, next day 1 egg and today 2 eggs. They didn't pause at all - I assumed relocation stress would cause them seize up their egg laying desire for a couple weeks. Not at all. One lays a pretty brown color- like barred rock brown egg and the other lays one that is about 2 shades darker- nice rich brown.

I think we are going to pause on chickens for a while. I need to finish hatching the little bantams I have in and then go from there. I did a head count and keepers- we have about 25 of each chicken and duck. We have just over 50 birds. That's quite a few lol. Not as many as a lot of you but that's more than we need for just ourselves with even a few leftover. :D

I've been reading the past few days but haven't felt like I had much to contribute so I've just been lurking. But I'm here! Weather is lovely here in Redding today and I guess for the next few weeks. Whoa mama! 80s even!

Anyone else warming up?

I am going to have too many chicks!!! I had a colleague who was going to take 10 but now he isn't. Plus I have the hatch. Was Hoping to keep all hatched girls and one hatched boy of the 36 I set but not now of the hatchery birds I ordered I only wanted to keep like 6-depending on the hatch.

I think I can do OK selling them on CL...mixed layer babies 3.00?? mixed 6 week old layers 6.00?
Hatchery babies 5.00?? Hatchery 6 week olds 12.00

My mixes are two diff mixed roos over Australorp, Delaware, New Hampshire BO and Red Star. The girls will all be good layers and I do believe they will be pretty so...do you think those prices sound right? I didn't think I was going to be selling anyone but things fall through.

Is Bar-Ale a good feed? I sent my husband out to get feed - I said all flock and he came back with organic starter from Bar-Ale. I died at the cost.

I didn't like their layer and my girls didn't either. I had an increase in egg wonkiness when I fed it but that may have not been a causal thing. My uncle feeds it and his girls haven't been laying as well...again, that could be caused by something else.

Woot! Guess who's playing hooky today to work on getting the coop framed? This Girl. gotta love progress!

Cheers!
Your pictures are wonderful! Love those babies. The coop looks great, too!

We sold our six week old hatchery layers for $10 and had two people interested in them. I think 12 is reasonable.

Lockdown initiated! How does it look?

I think we may need to add something to up the humidity. I have three of those little gladware things left so I may try those.

hahahahaha Ali I am gonna have too many chicks!!! They aren't gonna be Real Red stars but some will be red and they should be super good layers...If you want to try a couple out let me know. I will give them to you for making me laugh. I am of course counting my chickens before they hatch here and I will post fluffy butt pictures for your perusal at the end of the month.

Your build looks great. We always elevate all our coops, makes a nice protected place to get out of the sun/weather. And a nest box on the outside is always a good choice. Makes it easy to collect the eggs and doesn't take up any floor space. Great slant to your roof, the rain should just roll off without an issue.

Nice job!

Well after starting them on it- some of them started pooping very liquidy. I have been cutting it with wheat and oats and it is getting better. I don't think I will get more after this bag.

Question for you pro hatchers. I'm hatching duck eggs- I assume it's not too different from chicken...

My eggs do not look like that. I still have quite a ways to go yet and my eggs really look a lot like the ones at the bottom...like day 21 or so. I will get some pics tonight. They are wigglers and seem to be fine. Because I have goose eggs in I have to cool and mist them daily- I just go ahead and give the duck eggs the same treatment. Should I be concerned they look SO far advanced? Some of the eggs look like where they should be, some look like they are daysssss ahead of the others.

I posted this in another thread too- just curious...

Anything that looks like the good eggs is great! Make sure that the air cell is developing at the correct rate and you are golden!
