I hatched Blue Barnie Olive Egger chickens form Deann, JustStruttin. She is in Novato. You can get people to transport for you too. I live in Woodland and go to Redding and Shingletown to visit relatives. Cottonwood is just off of the Freeway for me. Others travel that way also.

Thank you! Wow, really? That's awesome ronott1...This site is awesome! I've googled and googled, but all I needed was the inside connections of the real people here . I did just seeTrisha in Cottonwood on this site...she had some gorgeous birds up there (BLUE Barnevelders?! I'm in love). It's a bit of a drive from Sacto, but it has to be better than shipped eggs!! Those things really get banged around in transit! I had to patch a couple cracked ones with candle was I set last Friday and they were the ones on the TOP of the box.

Your build looks great. We always elevate all our coops, makes a nice protected place to get out of the sun/weather. And a nest box on the outside is always a good choice. Makes it easy to collect the eggs and doesn't take up any floor space. Great slant to your roof, the rain should just roll off without an issue.

We have a similar design but no longer do an exterior nest box due to the bears swiping it right off to get to the yummy grain. so not all walls and locks are flush and the trim is strictly decorative..... mama bear and cubs are adorable but its a pain to run through the forest after chickens AND costly to repair...

Landlord rant

So when we applied for this house in October we were told (verbally

he seemed like such a sweet man) we could have chickens, dogs, cats, goats, sheep and bees.

When we wanted to order chickens in February and asked about using some building materials that have been sitting in the barn for (obviously) quite some time our landlord said "will talk chickens when up to fix ceiling" which was leaking in December and still has not been fixed. He never came.

Last month I let him know I would like a gate or chain across the driveway and he said he would come that weekend and put a chain and sign up. We were gone for only an hour that entire weekend and during that time I guess he came, because there was a huge pit dug in the garden, but that's it. Nothing else and no communication.

A list of other things he has told us he would take care of that have not been dealt with: New windows, filter for the water, fences, fix ceiling, water heater, lawn planted... he also took over a week to answer me when I asked for a copy of the lease.

I just sent him a message (his preferred form of communication) letting him know we had gotten an estimate for the bee removal, wanted to have the well water tested because one of our chickens had a possible ecoli infection, and the hot water heater was still not working well (SIX MONTHS LATER) and his response was "Chickens? Wait on the other issues. I will be there sat"

Yeah, chickens! You know, the animals we talked to you about months ago and you never replied to us about? The animals you told us we could have before we applied? The animals that are living in the coop you obviously would have seen when you came and dug a giant pit in the garden? What. the. heck.

What a pain. Good luck.

Oh love it, that is what I want to do for the five Bantams we have. The big chickens have a 10 x 12 new building but I want to seperate them. What plans are you using?

haha true! We have a year lease, anyway. It just pisses me off that he's so uncommunicative and although we're always very clear and responsible he's acting like he's surprised. It bothers me that he isn't fulfilling any of his legal obligations as our landlord, but I've let it slide because we love living here and like not having a lot of interference and I thought that was the trade off. I will make him cry using only my words (if being nice doesn't work) though, don't think that I won't.

Oh! And he never told us that our electricity is actually a different address and it got shut off and took me hours on the phone to figure out the debacle. During that time I tried to get a hold of him and he never got back in touch with me. Not even to see if everything worked out.

What a jerk face! How would your electricity even be at a different place? I wonder at the legality of that on the land lord's part.

I'm using a slightly larger, modified plan of THIS urban coop. I liked the style but wanted a little more space (5 hens). Can't wait till the little fuzzbutts finish feathering up!

Might have to play hooky again tomorrow to get the roof framed out. And I have a couple of old stained glass windows I'm incorporating for light. I'm still on a how-to-build-things learning curve, so we'll see what the finished product looks like in another week......
