someone asked if a dab of ACV in the incubator water helped keep the stink away at hatching. Am not sure if that was answered or if anyone knows. Have a Monday hatch with lock down coming soon
I haven't tried ACV but I did use a dab of Oxine in the water with my staggered chick/quail hatch that I just completed a little over a week ago and there was hardly any stink!

Hello all,

It's exciting reading about everyone's incubating and hatching experiences. I've been very jealous catching up on this thread. But now I finally have my own excitement to focus on as my 6 little chicks arrived this morning! I'm so worried about them being warm enough, this is my first time taking care of chicks. They don't seem to be going under the eco glow brooder that's in there and I don't think the heat lamp that's in there is giving off enough heat. I could only find a 150 watt infrared bulb and the temp reads low 80s in the brooder. That said, they don't appear to be too cold, sometimes they will be close together when they are sleeping but when they are up and around they didn't seem to have any issues separating and going about their business. I mainly got the heat lamp to bring up the general temp of the brooder since it's in the garage and have the eco glow as the main source of heat for the chicks. I'm not sure if I should change my set up.....I may be a little paranoid :)
I have found the best thing to do is to watch them, (the way you are) as their needs may be different than an instruction booklet. It is SOOOO much better to have them with more space in the garage than stinking it up in the house! I also always have a secondary source of warmth at the ready if needed even though it rarely is

. But those freak snowstorm happen and I don't want to have to panic so ....

Have fun checking in on them often!
Blessings.

So ladies and gents if I were to one day have a broody hen or two and if at that time I had not been totally smitten with yet another breed I would like to know where I can get eggs and/or culls of the following:

Silver Penciled PR
Icelandics
Welsummers
Barnvelders
Creme Legbars
EOs
Golden Laced Brahmas...the newest addition to the ever expanding list

I think what I want to work on at this point is not breeding anything to SOP but rather obtaining eye candy for my yard and my egg basket. I grew up showing sheep and horses and am not interested at this point in showing chickens

Thanks I just want to know who to contact when the time comes :-)

ETA prefer Yolo, Marin, Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties because it's an easy drive

We will be breeding Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks as soon as we get our breeding pens finished. Our SPPRs came from Cheryl, Omelet Ranch, and are beautiful! So, hopefully we will soon have some hatching eggs available! Next year we might have Welsummers and Cream Legbars, too. I also encourage you to consider Langshans! They are beautiful, stately birds with mild temperaments!

Thanks Ron, I just love looking at the color of eggs on the CL. The intensity and purity of the blue just makes me feel good inside looking at them.

The legbars I can do. However if you get eggs, they hatch white or cream (crele). I have both in my flock and the creams can carry the recessive white. I don't have any LF cochin laying at the moment, but I am just starting to hatch bantam Columbian cochins. I can supply eggs on the bantams.
I am hope you don't mind my butting in.

Will you tell the laying rates of your legbars? Also are they docile. I don't mind skittish so much as aggressive.... Im still hoping to start a breeding program this summer and just can't figure what will work best in our flock...
